For info on this book see Ms. Lyn’s interview. here is a short excerpt which already has piqued my interest! Anyone else see an echo of Tolkein and the lovely fanatasy stories we enjoy?? I can just feel the cold and snow and smell the icy crackling forest air!
*** EXCERPT
They awoke next morning to find, when they looked out of the window, snow falling heavily. Since it was only late spring on this part of Niflheim, however, that was hardly an unusual occurrence. The lake shimmered softly, like an opaque, blue-grey scarf, casually thrown down upon the landscape. Its silvery sheen contrasted with the virgin whiteness of the snow, which lay in large drifts, splashed with occasional patches of delicate pink. The trees in the distance below the mountains, and those at the edge of the lake itself, stood completely covered with snow, now. Their feathery branches looked like white eagles’ wings, raised to the sky. The beauty of the planet made Jess catch her breath. She could understand the determination of the ancient pioneers of old Earth to colonise it, despite the somewhat inhospitable conditions.
Gullin and Vidarh stood near the fire, apparently conversing telepathically, when they arrived downstairs. Vidarh was not wearing his customary smile, and when Jess met Gullin’s gaze she found a look she had never seen there before. Anxiety filled his eyes—and something else, something that looked like despair. He ran his hands through his hair and his voice, when he spoke, matched his expression. “There’s bad news, I’m afraid. The party heading for Midgaard was ambushed this morning, just beyond the Gunningap Mountains. They fought hard, but were no match for their attackers. One of our friends was killed. The others have all been taken prisoner—including Tamarith.”
