Take A Dance Down Movie-Romance Lane with JoAnne Kenrick

Hi, All! It’s an absolute pleasure and honor to be here at the Book Brew.

It’s February, as if you didn’t already know. That means it’s time to celebrate all things romantic.

I’m a sucker for a good romance. If a box of tissues or dancing shoes are required, then it’s a hit with me! Even better if it’s a late eighties, early nineties. There’s just something about the soundtracks and feel for that era that really resonates with me. Maybe that’s because I was still dreaming about finding real love when I first saw them back in the day. So…

This this is my homage to old, ionic romance movies that have major moments that make me smile whenever I think of them. I hope they make you smile, too — click on each movie title to be taken to a magical movie moment.

From Top Gun to Indecent Proposal  — which ever the romance movie, you can guarantee the pivotal romantic moment in the movie is an iconic one. They’re memorable, and the reason why those movies have become all time favorites for me.

Top Gun, 1986 — Which takes me straight to the bar scene, and Maverick claiming ‘she’s lost that loving feeling’.

Dirty Dancing, 1987 — “Nobody puts Baby in the corner.”

Some Kind Of Wonderful, 1987 — Watts puts on Keith’s diamond earrings and says, “ What do you think?.  He replies, “You look good wearing my future”.

Cocktail, 1988 — “If Jordan gives birth to a fine Irish son, there will be Cocktails and Dreams for him one day to run. A business that will yield the financial windfall, to be franchised in every suburban shopping mall. If a daughter arrives to bless our clan, I guess the shit will finally hit the fan. But this I shall promise thee, I’ll never let her marry a guy like me. Still if our child is the naughtiest of girls or the wildest of young men, I swear I’ll be the best dad I can. And never ever get spooked again.” And boy, does he get spooked again! LOL

Say Anything, 1989 — Remember that scene? Out on the lawn, John Cusack putting himself out there with the Ghetto Blaster blaring out the madly romantic vibes of Peter Gabriel’s In Your Eyes.

Ghost, 1990 — Sam Wheat, “It’s amazing, Molly. The love inside, you take it with you.” *hands out the tissues*

Indecent Proposal, 1993 — “If you ever want something badly, let it go. If it comes back to you, then it’s yours forever. If it doesn’t, then it was never yours to begin with”. Diana.

These are just some of my favorites. I’m willing to bet my whole romance-movie collection that you have favorites too! I hope you share them in the comments section, along with your favorite moment from said movies. Let’s share the love!

is it love, or an echo from long ago.

When A Mullo Loves A Woman By JoAnne Kenrick
.
“This is a deceptively complex story about the power of true love, featuring a scandalously wonderful leading man who will stop at nothing to save his soul mate. Throw in a few devious villains and a secret family legacy, and you have a winning and surprising paranormal romance.
All in all, this was a rewarding read. I enjoyed Pearl’s personal strength and fearlessness through all her ordeals, and still can’t get enough of Adam. Though I have read stories that deal with similar concepts, none of them had the emotional pull, or the thoughtfulness of this book, and I find that each character has stayed with me even after the last page was read.” Bridget, The Romance Reviews

Hmmm Favorite 80s romance huh? Dirty Dancing definitely… Pretty Woman…. Princess Bride… Pretty in Pink… Man you are making me think!

  • JoAnne Kenrick
    AUTHOR

Thanks for stopping by and commenting, Nicole!

OHHHH Pretty in Pink! I love that movie…but Duckie should have ended up with Andy — he was REALLY romantic and loyal. And his shoes rocked.

  • J.M. Madde

Nice post. Have to say, Tom Cruise does it for me every time. Your book looks great!

  • Maureen O. Betita

Wow, some great movies there. I can’t click over to them right now, but will check them out later!

It took me a long time to come to romance movies…but I like the idea of pulling out scenes… What a fun idea!

  • Jen Binford

I would have to be Pretty in Pink is my favorite. Every time that movie plays I have to stop and watch it!
    Jen

  • Leanne Dyck

Oh, yes, Dirty Dancing is the one for me. Can’t beat that throbbing beat.

  • Shiela Stewart

Oh I love the eighties movies. Two of my favorites. Flashdance and Footloose.

I love that moment in Flashdance when the couple are sitting at the table for dinner and she takes her bra off without removing her shirt. Priceless! I practiced that for days.

Footloose. Any dance scene specifically at the dance when they all forma circle and dance. Loved it!!

  • Johanna Johanna

Awesome some of my favs are on your list! Sixteen Candles, Romancing the Stone, and Overboard are a few more of my favs!

  • kathleen ann gallagher

Great idea, JoAnne. The old romantic movies are wonderful. One of my all time favorite is, They Way We Were. I remember the last scene when Barbra Streisand flicks the hair out of Robert Redfords eyes after running in to him after they break up. It was a touching last scene.
Another old classic is Love Story with Ali McGraw and Ryan O’Neal. A great line from the movie, is “love is never having to say your sorry”.

  • Cindy L

All of these movies I’ve watched over and over. Another favorite of mine is Last of the Mohicans. “You stay alive, no matter what occurs! I will find you. No matter how long it takes, no matter how far, I will find you.”

Hi, guys!! WOW so many comments 🙂
Thanks for dropping by and saying hello.

M.J., Tom Cruise in the 80s early 90s was a heartthrob indeed, even before his big romantic lead roles! Remember The Outsiders?! Oh my! And thanks for the comment about the book — hope you enjoy if you pick it up 🙂

Maureen, xx thanks for dropping by and commenting — sorry to have torn you away from work! *opps*

Jen, Pretty in Pink WOOT! I entered a contest to design that dress Andy made, before the movie was filmed. Of course I lost — had I won, she’d have looked a right state LMAO

Leanne, Dirty Dancing. All time favorite! Love a man who can move…Love Patrick!

Shelia, now we’re talking. Footloose, the finale dance is totally rocking. And Flashdance…woah — fantastic soundtrack.

Johanna, Romancing the Stone, that’s a classic. Michael Douglas isn’t much of a hottie, but in that movie…OH he rocks the hot stranger to the rescue role. LOVE IT.

Kathleen… “love is never having to say your sorry.” wonderful line indeed.

So who is your favorite leading man in all the romance movies? So many to choose from, but I think you’ve probably already guessed mine…
    Patrick Swayzee
    but also
    Kurt Russell
two very different guys who play two totally different types of ‘heros’.

  • Deena Remiel

Pretty Woman, when Richard Gere risks his fear of heights and goes up the fire escape, Julia Roberts says she saves him right back. I just find everything about the movie and Richard Gere romantic. Oh yeah, the piano scene! *sigh*

  • Deena Remiel

    thought I’d grace you with a clip…
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AJYmjlB9E4

  • Heather Bennett

Ah, yes Joanne, but DO remember that Patrick was also an ‘Outsider’! He played the older brother, the one who could have been a Soc, but was taking care of his little brothers and ended up a Greaser. Fave book as a teen.

LOVE all these movie. Such a trip down memory lane. Anyone ever do the Feris Buehller at Sears Tower? I DID! And wow…my Grandma took me to see Footloose in the theatre. I think I’ve seen it 100times. lol

    Thanks, Joanne! Fun blog!

ahh Deena, fantastic scene from Pretty Woman! Thanks for sharing 🙂 I tried snails once, she should count herself lucky she lost it before it found her mouth LOL

You and me both, Heather. I can’t recall how many times I re-read/watched The Outsiders. At the time, I had a thing for Ralph Macchio (Johnny) Perhaps because he needed someone to take care of him?! And it still makes me cry.

Not really romance related, but definitely feel-good. Here’s my favorite scene from Ferris, for Heather:

Designing the Perfect Romance Cast Register by April 29th and save $5, use code ROMANCECASTKNIGHT2024 at checkout! In this brand-new month-long online class, New York Times bestselling author Angela Knight discusses the importance of creating the perfect cast for the kind of romance you’re trying to write.

A memorable romance cast is more than the sum of its parts. To create an effective book, all the characters – protagonists, antagonists, and minor characters – must work together as a unit. And each must fit the kind of book you’re trying to write. Leatherface of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre does not belong in a Rom Com. Nor do you want minor characters to steal the book.

But how do you create a good cast for this particular book and the audience you’re aiming for?

Angela discusses how to design your heroic couple for each other, along with the minor characters and sidekicks who help make the protagonists three-dimensional.

She’ll also talk antagonists and their henchmen, and how to use them to create tension and excitement.

Next, she’ll explore dialogue, humor and arguments as a way to develop character and conflict.

The result will be a firm foundation for your book so you won’t be flailing in the dark, trying to figure out why the heck your book isn’t working.

Lessons in this month-long online class will be posted on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, students may email scenes to Angela for her private critique and suggestions.

Check out #marteekakarland #hot #MC series #GrimRoad series. Save at #changelingPress #Rocket #Lemon #Bullet These belong on your #keeper shelf

Rocket: My life pretty much took a hard left a year ago when I first met Lemon. She’s wise beyond her years and as abrasive and sarcastic as they come. The second she busts my VP’s balls -- literally -- I know I’d never be able to forget her. A year later I’m still infatuated with the vicious woman. When she runs off to charge hell with a water pistol, I’m right behind her wondering how we’re gonna get out of this one alive. But I have a smile on my face and a determination to give this woman anything she wants. Even if it means some things in my club are going to have to change.

Lemon: Look. This is supposed to be all about how Rocket caught my eye and I decided I wanted him but there were obstacles and… phfffffff… Forget all that. What you need to know is when people are stupid, they need a kick in the… Crap. I’m not supposed to swear here. Grrrrr! Anyway, this is where I come in. Grim Road needs fixing. I’m not exactly qualified to do club… garbage, but Rocket? Yeah. I might have decided I’ll keep him, so… I’m great at whipping people into shape. Grim Road, meet Lemon. See me, love me, MF’ers.

Rocket: Just pass me the beer and popcorn…

Lemon: I’m settling in at Grim Road in my role as vice president. The men test me, but it’s all in good fun. I think I enjoy it as much as they do. Then, out of nowhere, things go horribly sideways. I realize how much weaker I am physically than everyone else in the club. That weakness can be a horrible liability. Yeah. Things are going great. Until they aren’t. I may have bitten off more than I can chew…

Rocket: My little sourpuss is a force to be reckoned with. She takes everything dished out to her and gives it back in spades. She’s my VP, but she’s also my old lady. Sometimes, I need to take care of her. More importantly, she has to let me. That fact is never more apparent than when a small team of roughnecks think she’s a woman from another club.

Watch for Knox....he`s coming

Kissed by the Alien is the second book of the Holiday Heartmates series by Julie K. Cohen.

Lexi is amazing! She’s strong, brave, resourceful, fearless, stubborn and feisty. And she has such a kind and compassionate heart. Even more, I loved her courage, determination and confidence to do the things she does and to face any challenges and hardships thrown her way. Lexi is a wonderful woman and I loved her so, so much!

And Lutan is such an incredible male! He’s brooding, quiet, fearsome and not very fond of Earth. And he’s also honorable, kind and fiercely protective. But the Zyanthan warrior also carries so much guilt and pain inside his heart. Nevertheless, Lutan is amazing and I adored everything about him!

I absolutely loved everything that happened between Lexi and Lutan! While on a mission to track down illegal blasters that keep finding their way on Earth, Lutan captures a male who turns out to be no man at all. I loved those two together! I loved their instantaneous attraction and their chemistry was fantastic. Even more, their banters, bargaining and teasing were so much fun to read. Lexi and Lutan might seem to be on opposite sides of the law, but they fit so well together. I loved how protective Lutan was of Lexi and I adored Lexi for standing her ground and never backing down from challenges and danger. And, yet, both had so many things they needed to deal with. Lutan also really did his best to stay away from Lexi, but fate cannot be denied. And when they couldn’t resist the undeniable need for one another anymore, the passionate moments they shared were so hot! I just love the Zyanthan warriors and all their… extras! Lexi and Lutan were so perfect for each other and, after everything both went through, they deserved to find happiness and love together!

Overall, Kissed by the Alien is another fantastic addition to the series! It’s filled with suspense, danger, action, drama, angst, twists, betrayals, humor, scorching hot passion and magnificent characters.
