Unlike A Lady’s Revenge, the in-my-head movie casting for The Boxer and the Blacksmith came first. It was so easy, it just wrote itself! (So says months of worry and work and research and editing.)
But Bess had been in my head since the first book, as she is John Arthur’s best mate, more or less. They grew up together, trained together, fought together. They’re both descended from Irish immigrants and grew up in Paddington–an area of London where the Irish laborers settled after working on building a new park nearby.
For me, Bess was best embodied by Gwendoline Christie, who played Lady Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones. The height, the strength, and the unabashed want she embodied in the TV version is very similar to how I see Bess Abbott.
For Os Worley, I knew the moment he popped into my brain what he looked like. This actor isn’t exactly it, but again, it’s partly his looks, his deep voice, but also the warmth he seemed to convey in every candid photo: the now-gone actor Michael Clarke Duncan, probably best known for his work in the movie The Green Mile.

Can London’s lady champion fight for love?
As London’s undefeated women’s boxer, Bess Abbott has the scars—both inside and out—to prove it. But when one of her boxing students, Violet, needs protection, Bess Abbott’s rock hard heart cracks open. And when a handsome blacksmith comes along, giving her compliments and treating her, well, like a woman, Bess doesn’t know what to do. She’s on the ropes in the face of his affections.
Os Worley was a child when he became an accidental stow-away. He grew up not knowing the family or the island that inflected his accent. His only memory of his mother is a head bent, hands working a stitch, a voice humming a melody. Now that he has his own foundry, and his own apprentice, he’s come to London to find the woman attached to this impression. His heart is already tempered and quenched, focused on his goal—but a lady boxer threatens to recast his love in her own image.
As Os and Bess face off, will they toe the line or retreat to their corners?
