QUESTION: What inspired you to write your debut novel?
Romy Sommer said:
This story was inspired by a dream I had years ago. All I remembered of the dream was a European prince making a speech on the steps of a cathedral after his coronation, and the woman who loved him watching from the crowd. I wrote the book during Nanowrimo 2009 but much as I loved the characters, I had to admit it didn’t have a particularly compelling story. So I set it aside.
A few years later I was listening to Katy Perry’s ‘Waking up in Vegas‘ in the car (singing along at the top of my voice, as I do when I’m alone) and the idea of how to fix this story hit me like a lightning bolt: What would you do if you woke up in Vegas, covered in gold glitter, and found yourself married to a European prince?
This was just before Nanowrimo 2012, so over a wild 29 days I re-wrote their story, starting from scratch. Same characters, same setting, but a very different story. And it worked!
In early 2013 ‘Waking up in Vegas‘ became not only my debut book with HarperCollins, but the debut book for an entire new imprint, HarperImpulse. Thank you Katy Perry!
