Years ago Mara had found the man of her dreams. He was wild and had a knack for being a ‘bad boy’ but fate had other plans. Grey ended up going to prison and Mara ended up in a loveless marriage caring for two dogs she adored. Now Grey comes back into her life and she is no longer the young woman she was with her life wide open; she’s a wife and caretaker to a disabled man and two aging dogs. Grey looks as if he’s not aged past his twenties. He offers Mara immortality and a life with him, but she cannot just up and leave her disabled husband and beloved dogs, so Grey tells her he will wait for her. Mara is determined to see her marriage and duty towards both her husband and her dogs but when fate throws another curve ball at her, will it be too late?
Grey is this story’s “bad boy.” He is the hero that every reader is going to fall for and his undying devotion towards Mara is going to endear readers to him even more. However, there’s not much else to know about him other than he missed his one shot because he could not stay out of trouble. Now that he has a second chance he is relentless. However, he’s honorable. He refuses to force her into a life with him even though it could mean he might have to wait years for her.
Mara is a typical woman who married for love but has seen that love wane over the years. She lives with the “what ifs” but has resigned herself to her life. She takes care of a disabled husband and cares for two special needs dogs, which is admirable and endearing. She shows great strength throughout the book. Mara becomes desperate to learn who she is when Grey comes back into her life. The complications that his coming back and other events that also occur force her to review her life.
Ashes to Ashes, was not what I had hoped it to be. It was hard to feel connected to Grey and Mara. I loved the premise of the book and the blurb drew my attention and I admired the pet lover that Mara was, but I felt as if the connection between the two main characters wavered and was weak. There were a few parts in the book where I felt engaged.
