Tristan had been a star member in the Scholmance magical academy until he got into internal politics and was expelled. Forced to make his own way, he wanders around central Europe, free-lancing his magician’s skills and serving as an occult personal assistant. This lifestyle led him into some dangerous and challenging situations. In one he acquired the contract of Jarek with whom he is now partnered for a year.
Jarek is an incubus, a pleasure demon who feeds on sexual energy and exists solely to please those who contract for his services. Grim and ugly memories haunt him, though he normally conceals the trauma. Tristan’s quiet angst and emotional issues confound and confuse Jarek and tend to bring out his own past.
Tristan’s latest employer sends him to heel a strange artist who has become the Baron’s protegee so a planned exhibition of his dark art will be a success. From this contact, Tristan acquires a dangerous and illegal artifact that drives him to the edge of tragedy. Jarek is also involved in the fallout from this misadventure.
I was enchanted by the unique setting as well as the contrasting characters of Tristan and Jarek, on the surface a somewhat mismatched pair. The author gives just enough back story one can make sense of the unfolding plot since this is the third installment of an ongoing series. The prose is lucid, simple and direct yet paints scenes with vivid skill so a reader feels as if she is present in the action. The parameters of urban fantasy are met without resort to genre clichés. Although Angel Eye is a stand alone work, I plan to read the first two novellas in The Sons of Gomorrah series and will watch for future installments. The sex is hot yet never gratuitous and always touched with realistic emotion. The men’s evolving relationship and all the diverse aspects of the plot are seamlessly stitched into an absorbing and believable tale. Fans of the genre will not be disappointed.
