Everyone makes mistakes, right? Well, I made a doozie. See, I’d just watched my best friends get married. Maybe that’s what had me feeling like something was missing. Or maybe it was the tequila. Whatever the reason, the next thing I know I’m standing before an official in a seedy little chapel off the Vegas strip, exchanging vows with a woman I don’t know””Savanna Morgan.
Savanna is unlike any woman I’ve ever met. She’s a strange mixture of sophistication and innocence. She told me she was a waitress, but only because I assumed she was a hooker at first. (I told you I’d made a helluva mistake, but if you could have seen that little red dress she was wearing…) Anyway, once my mind cleared, I could tell she wasn’t a prostitute. Her clothes were too nice, her hair cut a little too”¦you know, for a working girl. But a waitress? No way in hell.
The simple solution would have been a quickie divorce, but who said this whole mess was simple? I needed Savanna out of my life, but the next thing I knew, she’s spending the weekend with me at a Texas ranch in order to help save my job. I just didn’t count on her being underfoot, or getting under my skin so quickly.
I’m just a regular guy trying to make ends meet. My friend Jackson and I have a small construction business, and the biggest client we’ve ever had is just out of reach. If we could just get Red Sullivan to sign the dotted line, we could build his dream ““ a family-themed casino. Then our lives would be golden.
That’s where Savanna comes in. See, Red likes family men. And now that he thinks Savanna and I are “family’ , we’ve got to keep up the charade. But only for the weekend. Come Monday, we’ll be able to get everything annulled and go our separate ways. That should be easy enough. Right?
Wrong. I failed to mention that sparks fly whenever Savanna and I are within a hundred feet of each other. Red hot, Forth of July kind of embers that smolder and seethe and burn. And the next thing I know we’re””
Well, let’s just say it’s not easy for us to keep our hands to ourselves when we’re left together for too long. And that’s exactly what happens at the Sullivan ranch.
I can’t help but think about what’s going to happen once our weekend is over. Is she really going to go back to Vegas and marry her cheating ex-fiancé? I mean, not that I want a wife. I don’t. But she deserves better than to spend the rest of her life with that lying bastard.
And suddenly, I’m having a hard time imagining my life without her”¦
Sometime during the night, Brodie woke with Savanna spooned tightly against him. He sighed in relief that their lovemaking hadn’t been a figment of his imagination or even just an over-the-top dream. She was here, with him, cuddled up against him like she belonged there. And somehow he knew she did. She belonged with him. In some ways, she belonged to him.
What about tomorrow? he thought, casting a glance over her bare shoulder to the digital alarm clock. 2:35 A.M.. Today, he amended. It was their last day together. He was sure Red had planned some festivity or another right up until the time their plane was scheduled to take flight.
Brodie smiled and inhaled the strawberry fragrance of Savanna’s hair. That was just one more thing he liked about the big Texan; the man knew how to celebrate. Whatever Red had planned for the day, Brodie had plans of his own. He was going to make today the best day of his life. He was going to live it up, keep Savanna right by his side. He was going to show everyone how much in love they were and how a newly married couple should act. Though this time he wouldn’t be acting, at least about the amorous newlywed part. He would have to fudge the love part, because there was no way he loved Savanna. Sure, she was beautiful and warm and caring, and she deserved so much more than Kilgore the Human Slug. And sure it would pull his heart out of whack when she left tomorrow, but that didn’t mean he loved her””not really.
Tomorrow, er”¦later today, he would enjoy what time he had left to enjoy of Savanna’s company. But for now, he was going to wake her up and make love to his wife again and again. He’d worry about the pesky details later. Much, much later.
A passionately wicked smile curved across his lips as he trailed his hand down her side.
She mumbled sleepily, then those incredible amber eyes opened. She blinked several times as if trying to focus.
Brodie smiled to himself as he continued to lightly run his fingers up and down her pale flesh. “Good morning, sunshine.”
“Morning,” she whispered in return, a small smile curving up the corners of her oh-so-kissable lips. “It’s still dark outside.”
“Yes, I know, and we’ve got business to attend to before dawn.”
Her small smile turned into an out and out sexy grin as she looped her arms around his neck and pulled his mouth down to hers.
“Oh, yes,” she purred just before their lips met. “I almost forgot. Lots and lots of business.”
Amie Louellen loves nothing more than a good book. Except for her family”¦and maybe homemade tacos”¦and shoes. But reading and writing are definitely high on the list. When she’s not creating quirky characters and happy endings she enjoys going to little league baseball games and boy scout meetings. Born and bred in Mississippi, Amie is a transplanted Southern Belle who now lives in Oklahoma with her deputy husband, their genius son, a spoiled cat, and one very hyper beagle.
