A few years ago, a team of young bricklayers were building an extension to our house. At the end of a long, hard day’s work they discovered the wall they’d just built was out of place by four inches. The cursing and complaining as they realised they’d have to pull it down and start the entire thing again was so loud it drew my elderly neighbour to the fence. She watched them for a while, then in a voice laden with saccharine sweetness, said, “Oh dear. Have you just finished a time-consuming task only to find you have to do it all over again tomorrow? Congratulations. Now you know what women face every day.”
The look on those boys’ faces was priceless.
I know in 2015 a lot of those repetitive jobs around the house are shared between men and women, but lessons from the past remain with us. Women learn resilience, patience and that some things take constant effort to maintain. Do-overs happen, and like the out-of-place wall, having another go gives you a chance to make it right.
This, I think, is what fuels my love of the Romance genre. People make mistakes, mess things up but they don’t give up. They try again, they adjust, they learn to look at things in a different way and they forgive themselves and the ones they love.
My heroes and heroines are human. They do dumb things. They doubt themselves, but they keep going””they keep trying to improve. Because that’s what people do. And the Romance genre celebrates that.
So when my publisher, Totally Bound, gave me an opportunity to re-release some of my earliest books, I leapt at it. We all love a good renovation. New paint, new furniture and a whole new feel. I loved adding new scenes, and bringing things up to date. I scrubbed and polished and added some extra sparkle. Oh, and sex. There is plenty of hot, steamy sex mixed in with the romantic tension.
I always had a soft spot for one of my earliest works, Send Me an Angel, where Ellie discovers a naked, sleeping angel her doorstep. The rewrite allowed me to increase the sexual tension between the two characters and explore the ways Matthew’s fall to Earth teaches Ellie about sensuality, love and forgiveness.
Those are lessons we all need to keep working on.
When Ellie opens her door on her birthday, she finds a naked man on her doorstep. Peter is an angel, on a mission to find out how sex can be so powerful that new arrivals in heaven grieve for eons over its loss.
Ellie has been selected to teach him. The lessons work both ways though, and soon Ellie is the one learning things about herself. Together Peter and Ellie explore their desires, overcome her fears and set her free to discover her true sensual nature.
Her angel is the best present Ellie ever received. Who knew how much fun grown-ups could have with toys?
Publisher’s Note: This book was previously released by Totally Bound under the same title. It has been expanded, revised and re-edited for re-release.
