Audra is on the run from her abusive boyfriend, and the man who threatened to take their baby Roxie from her. Audra will do anything to escape Tom, even flee into the mostly abandoned alien underground of Kwadran.
Tal Pelletier was once a technician in a future alternate Earth, but when his world’s environment began to collapse, he and his fellow Kwadrans went underground. Then as the environment continued to deteriorate, as well as other dangers became apparent, he and his people using futuristic technology jumped their island home to another more primitive Earth. Unfortunately, not long before the jump Tal lost his beloved wife and baby. Now he is just an alcoholic construction worker trying to get by on memories in a world that is not his own.
When Audra flees in the night with her baby Roxie, she is aware of the possible dangers that she could face, but she also knows if she does not get herself and Roxie away from Tom, her narcissistic, now ex-boyfriend who has ties to law enforcement and friends in high places, she could possibly lose her custody of her daughter forever. She knows she cannot let that happen. Finding and getting help from Tal, a Kwadran who seems to genuinely want to help her is serendipitous, but Audra who was adopted and grew up in the school of hard knocks has a difficult time trusting him. However, once they go underground, where the dangers are suspected but not completely known, she has no choice but to trust him with the her and her baby’s life. Tal feels that his meeting Audra and Roxie the way he did is a sign from the Earth Mother, and that he has some lesson to learn from the two females. But will he be able to learn that lesson while keeping Audra, Roxie, and himself safe, or will the dangers of the underground futuristic city overcome them all? And what of their growing feelings for each other? Only time will tell what the final outcome will be.
I enjoyed Alien Contact for Runaway Moms by Edward Hoonaert very much! The world building in this series is very imaginative, and I really loved all the characters in this book since each has their own very specific personality and story. The romance between Tal and Audra is slow to develop at first, but in my opinion, this is one of the things that makes this book good. The only thing I wish is that I had been able to read to read the other books in the series before this one since there were parts of the Kwadran culture, and its people that I think had I done so I would have had a better understanding of parts of what was going on in this book. Still it’s a lovely story, and I have no problem recommending it for lovers of science fiction romance, though I would suggest reading the other books in the series first so you have a handle on the ins and outs of the Kwadran world and culture, and the different secondary character’s stories.
