Misty Morning, for sure. Misty is the second main character in Healer, which is written in alternating chapters from the POVs of Misty and Shilo Giannelli, who discovers she possesses the spiritual gift of healing. While Shilo is the obvious heroine, Misty shines like a diamond in the rough, which makes her an interesting character and one that’s both challenging and fun to develop.
Misty is pretty jaded from a life of struggles and heartbreak, and I wanted to convey that in her voice and attitude. But she’s also a study in contrast. She’s this tough chick on the outside, and Belle on the inside. She loves books and learning, and absolutely adores her son. Her life experience, however, has given her an edginess. I love these contrasts in her, and how her sweetness always emerges when she’s with her son, who is also one of my favorite characters because he provides comic relief when the drama gets intense.
Misty’s history does not take place in real time, but here’s what the reader learns through conversations and Misty’s thoughts: Her dad left when she was a baby. A few years later, her mom died of a drug overdose. After a series of foster homes, Misty thinks she finally found a family who loves her. She let’s down her guard, starts going to school, and is just opening up her heart to them when they abandon her. Misty hits the streets at sixteen, gets pregnant, and moves in with her abusive boyfriend, believing it’s better than being homeless with a baby. But when her son is two, he’s beaten by the boyfriend while Misty is away. This is the point where Shilo’s healing powers are first revealed, and the two girls, from two different worlds, become unlikely friends.

Healer
[Young Adult]
Hovering just below the surface of Shilo Giannelli’s average existence lays an amazing spiritual power. Late one night, her world erupts with the revelation that, like her great-grandmother, she has The Gift. But the power to heal isn’t something she can share with the soccer team, her genius little sister, or her boyfriend, Kenji. Definitely not Kenji.
Deep beneath Misty Morning’s tough façade is a lifetime of abandonment, foster homes and broken dreams. When her two-year-old son is abused by her boyfriend, her fragile world shatters…until Shilo prays for Tyler, and he is healed, leaving Misty grateful but incredibly curious.
Shilo can’t give Misty the answers she needs; she only knows she has a God-given destiny, and despite facing strained relationships, impossible decisions, and the threat of being hounded day and night for her abilities, she will fulfill it.
The journey Misty and Shilo take together unites them as friends but invites danger into their lives. And it will take a miracle for these unlikely friends to elude a gang bent on revenge, keep The Gift a secret, trust God in extraordinary circumstances, and hold on to the people they love.
