QUESTION: Of your published titles to date, which heroine is your favorite and why?

Favorite heroine of my published titles to date? Hmmm…that’s a tough one, especially since I am wrapped up in the heroine of my current manuscript. However, of my published titles to date I would have to pick Grayson Ridge. She’s the heroine of my historical romance The Inn At Little Bend. She enters the story as an orphan thrown away as so much garbage. For the first years of her life she believed herself to be just that—worthless dregs of society. Her adoptive family reinforced the same attitude again and again over the years. It could have been her undoing. Instead my daring heroine escaped, and had none to depend on but herself. I applaud how Grayson discovered her worth, her ingenuity, her grit. The lives of abandoned women in antebellum Americas were difficult at best, at worst they were chattel. Grayson realized that she was as brave as any man and as smart as any man. Unfortunately she lacked the freedom and the opportunities of any man. What to do? I admire her because she decided to risk beating them at their own game. Grayson infiltrated the world dominated by men. She stood proud like a man, dressed like a man, spoke like a man, shouted like a man. Lo and behold, she gained the respect of men, one man in particular. While his respect brought her enormous pride, it also brought another problem to tackle. She fervently wished for this man to respect her same qualities if she confessed to being a woman. It was a problem that took the entire story for her to conquer. But conquer she did.

What I love best about Grayson is that she did not retreat; she did not give up. She did not stagnate and bemoan her fate. Instead she opened her mind again and again to see the opportunities that fate had created and seized them. Grayson developed from a shy, scared orphan to a self assured woman—a woman who knew her own mind and would accept no less than the best for herself.
