QUESTION: Of your published titles to date, which hero is your favorite and why?
Helen Henderson said:
In last month’s author’s dish we revealed our favorite heroine. Now the male side of the equation gets their due. The decision of favorite hero is no easier than favorite heroine.
First I looked at each of the men I’ve written about. There are the mature alpha males, Dal, Archmage of the World from the Windmaster Novels, and the dragon lord Branin from the Dragshi Chronicles. Or the younger Colwyn whose tale is told in Imprisoned in Stone. Another option could be the beta male who helped save a lost archive in “Withym: Treasure Beneath The Sand.” More names of heroes and ordinary men from the short stories and novellas in First Change: Legends From The Eyrie are added to the list.
Way to many men to choose from.
A spin of the wheel and Lord Dal is the winner.
Now to explain his selection. I love horses. Taerneach, head stallion of the vale, chose Dale as his rider and lifelong friend. Always trust a horse’s instinct. A former mercenary before his powers emerged, Dal is a tactician and skilled swordsman, two talents needed for a hero in a fantasy. His courage to carry on in the face of adversity also calls to me.
But there is more to Dal’s selection than the martial side. He is not above showing compassion and helping an innocent, no matter the cost to himself.
Although Branin also meets all the above criteria, since I selected a heroine from the dragon shifter series, the Dragshi Chronicles, this time I chose a hero from the sword and sorcery series, the Windmaster Novels.
Excerpts and a free read of the first chapters from the volumes in the two series can be found on my blog.
