I’m sure music plays a role in the creation of many authors’ books. For me, just a few lines of one of my favorite songs began a journey that ended in my debut novel Captured Hearts.
The best concert I’ve ever attended included American Authors, The Script, and the headliner was One Republic. At the time, their song Counting Stars was popular. I liked the song, but when I heard them play this song live, a couple lines stuck with me the whole night.
I’d been toying around with this story for a while, but hadn’t found the direction I really wanted to go. I had the characters and their personalities, a setting, and some story ideas, but I needed a plot to challenge me. First, we started with the MCs meeting in my small town setting. Each had a painful past they were trying to overcome.
Nope. Didn’t work.
I tried the chance meeting in the city and ending in the small town.
Worse.
I work as a sports writer so I thought make them athletes with physical and emotional injuries retreating to this small town.
Even worse.
I listened to Counting Stars more and more. Each time I heard those particular lines, a story began to form with very vivid pictures. This story would romance with a HEA, but with a very difficult journey.
The line “I feel something so right by doing the wrong thing And I feel something so wrong by doing the right thing,” was my hero Jamey.
This started the book remained an internal conflict throughout the story.
“I could lie, couldn’t I, couldn’t I? Every thing that kills me makes me feel alive.” I thought Allee personified this line. She had so many problems she had to face alone her entire life, but she was strong and kept going no matter what happened to her.
Even now, when I hear Counting Stars I’m back in my story reliving the painful, but ultimately happily ever after journey.
