March 2018: Runaway Characters

CTR asked:
How do you handle characters who change personality without your say so? Or, how do you handle characters whose spontaneous actions change the plot or course of the story?

Gina Danna said:
I was writing my Ancient Rome romance, Love & Vengeance, and had a scene involving the hero’s best friend and the heroine. This is a gladiator story and the H/h are slaves in a Roman house, him being the gladiator. Well, I had plotted the scene to go one way and as I was hitting the keyboard, both characters screamed “no! that’s not how this went! THIS is what happened…”, which changed the scene. Of course, I wrote what they told me. Oddest thing to happen, to have my characters rewrite a scene, but their version was better, had a larger impact and I was stunned.
