QUESTION: What inspired you to write your debut novel?
Jennifer Wilck said:
My debut novel, a contemporary romance titled A Heart of Little Faith, was inspired by something I was watching on TV. At the time, I had two young kids and was perpetually exhausted. My husband and I were watching TV in the evening after the kids had gone to bed. I don’t remember the show specifically, other than it being some criminal procedural, but there was a minor character that was on screen for maybe a total of two minutes. The character, and the actor who played him, was in a wheelchair. Since no one else was, I thought that might be the reason I noticed him. But I completely forgot about the chair because of his eyes. They were intense and drew me in immediately. I spent the rest of the show waiting for him to come back, but he never did. So I created a story for him.
I grabbed my computer and for the next several months I spent every night after my kids were in bed writing his story. It flowed from my fingers onto the page. I wanted some of that intensity to come through in my book, so he turned into a prickly man who was more comfortable around kids than adults. He was independent, gorgeous and kind beneath that harsh exterior. I paired him up with a sweet woman with a young daughter. He loved kids but wasn’t willing to let himself get hurt after his last girlfriend destroyed him. She loved and lost her husband and wasn’t ready to start dating again. But her daughter bridged the gap and brought them together. And A Heart of Little Faith was born.
Interestingly enough, this book inspired me as well. When its publisher went out of business, I decided to make the book the first one I self-publish. It’s always sold well and even though I’m currently with another publisher, I’ve always been interested in self-publishing. So I spoke to some writer friends who have done it already and after taking their advice, I’m ready to re-release it in June. I can’t wait for this new experience!
