March 2019: Keeper Shelf
~ Helen Henderson ~
CTR asked:
Which book is at the top of your keeper shelf, the book you like to re-read over and over? And why?
Helen Henderson said:
The topic specifically states book at the top of the keeper pile. The wording prevents cheating by declaring a series counts as a single work. And none of the books on my keeper shelves (yes, multiple shelves and more on that later) are in piles so there is one on the top, so I can’t cheat that way either. Making the decision harder is the change in my reading interests over the years and the multiple shelves of books I have enjoyed.
I could go philosophical and pick a book that had religious or personal significance. Or, I could look to one of my writing references to narrow down to the number one re-read book. After all that book is read, and read, and read again. But not the entire book, usually only a paragraph here or a page there. However, Coffee Time Romance is for fiction readers so I’ll go with books read for recreation.
That didn’t help narrow down the list too much. I still have several shelfs (and a couple of boxes in the closet) to choose from. I decided to try another tact and start with a favorite author to help narrow things down. Based on the number of books they published, the list of authors was limited to two: Louis L’Amour and Anne McCaffrey. Then I had to pick either a stand-alone work or one of the series.
The most-read author I selected was Anne McCaffrey. The books were narrowed down to Pegasus in Flight, Dragon Flight, The Rowan¸or Crystal Liine.
So to answer the top book, the one most re-read from my keeper shelf is…
Drumroll please…
Dragon Flight, the first book in the Dragon Riders of Pern series. As to why it has been re-read over and over? The storyline contains a little of everything: coming of age, overcoming hardship, romance, an epic quest and of course, dragons. And if you’ve read my fantasy series, the Dragshi Chronicles, you know I love to fly with dragons.

First Change: Legends From the Eyrie (Dragshi Chronicles, Book 5)
[Fantasy Dragon Shifter Romance, MF, Love Story]
The dragshi are more than just a man or woman. Each are two beings–one a dragon, the other a human–sharing one body in space in time and able to change forms with the other at will. Their world and the adventures of the dragon shifters are recorded in the Dragshi Chronicles. Unlike the previous works in the series which related the tales of the trader girl Anastasia and Lord Branin Llewlyn, this companion volume, First Change features from the history and myth of the world of dragshi.
Within each of the chronicles, the ceoltiers, the keepers of the past and teachers of the present, recount some legend. First Change features the full story behind the legends only given brief reference in the previous volumes. As with all such tales, some contain larger than life deeds. Others are the simple story of a man or woman doing what must be done, regardless of the cost. But a lesson to be learned. When you shift into dragon form, sometimes Fate controls the flight.
First Change contains three novellas (and two bonus short stories) of duty and honor, love and loss, happiness and despair from the world of the dragshi and their twinned souls.
