June 2018: Publishing Path

CTR asked:
QUESTION: Which path did you take: Trad, Indie, or Hybrid? And what led you to that choice?

Dania Voss said:
Knowing traditional publishing is incredibly difficult, I felt the indie route was probably best for me. Even so, before landing at Evernight Publishing, I did quite a bit of research first. As an aspiring author, nervous about jumping into the publishing game, I wanted to make sure I gave myself the best possible chance for success once I finally delved in. I didn’t know enough to try and strike out on my own.

I attended my first ever writer/reader conference in Dallas in August 2012 and met many of my favorite authors from the hosting indie publisher (sadly it wasn’t Evernight). It was an amazing experience however, that I’ll never forget. I met these wonderful, talented men and women and thought – Yes! I really want to do this.

They were such a fantastic group of people. I wanted to be a part of the publishing community because of my experience at that conference. I found these indie authors to be enthusiastic, gracious and supportive of each other. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of something like that?

Over the next few years I learned everything I could about the craft of writing, read like crazy, we’re talking thousands of stories, and researched the indie publishers in the marketplace. I was looking for an established publisher with a good reputation that treated their authors fairly.

I compiled a list of publishers I believed would be a good fit for me and what I wanted to write with Evernight at the top of the list and the writer/reader conference publisher second, along with a few others.

Once I was well into writing my debut contemporary erotic romance On the Ropes, the Windy City Nights series prequel during NaNoWriMo 2017, I reviewed the submission criteria for the publishers on my list and discovered the writer/reader conference publisher had just changed their submission criteria and On the Ropes didn’t fit their submission criteria any longer. It was a shock and unsettling. I had a game plan in mind and suddenly I had to change it.

On December 31st 2017 I submitted On the Ropes to Evernight – and the rest, as they say, is history. On the Ropes was published on March 26, 2018. From top to bottom everyone at Evernight has been wonderful. The Evernight family of authors are truly the best group of people you’ll ever meet – dynamic, supportive, encouraging and helpful. I feel extremely lucky and grateful to be a member of the Evernight family.

On May 28th I submitted The Warrior’s Whisper, Windy City Nights 1 to Evernight for their consideration. Fingers crossed!
