Absidy Jones is nineteen and a ghost magnet. Ghosts come to her because only through her can they get to the afterlife. Unfortunately for Absidy, it seems to be only the violent ghosts that want to use her, and in her childhood she was brutalized by them, receiving broken bones and more from angry ghosts. But all is not lost, Absidy discovers that iron will keep the ghosts away, so she wears iron including chains in her hair and an iron corset that earns her the nick name “the iron maiden” in college. And she spends a lot of time looking for iron and melting it down into edible chunks in the science lab, because the alternative is so unpalatable.

Mase is a pilot and love interest of Absidy.

When Absidy’s sister Ellison, a doctor, disappears in deep space with the only clue left behind her last word, “sail,” the world thinks Ellison has gone into deep space willingly and does not want to be found, but Absidy and her father know this is not the case. Ellison would never willingly leave them, and in fact Absidy thinks her sister was trying to say “Saelis” the name of an enemy alien race that destroyed Earth and nearly wiped out humanity centuries in the past during the Black war. At this point Absidy has no intention of staying in college as instructed by her father, and when she is nearly caught stealing an expensive amount of iron, and nearly gets killed by a strange guy with green glowing eyes, she knows it is time to leave. So, with the help of her friends, she changes her looks to those of a boy, and boards a ship under the name James. Unfortunately, she boards a haunted ship where everyone from the captain to the doctor and pilot is terrified. On top of that, Absidy finds herself very attracted to Mase, the pilot, but she is supposed to be a boy, so attempts to keep her libido under control. With her need for iron increasing for some reason, and the ghosts becoming more and more violent, can Absidy save herself, the crew, and find her sister Ellison in time? And what about her deepening feelings for Mase, is there any way to have a relationship with him when she is supposed to be a fourteen  year old boy?

All I can say is WOW! What a story!! I absolutely LOVED Sail! This has to be one of the most creative, engaging, suspenseful, and just plain fun story lines I have had the pleasure to read this year. I just could not put this book down. I read it on the bus going to and from work, at work when no one was looking (snicker) on my lunch break, basically any time I could get away with it. The characters are fantabulous, and I really loved how much Absidy loves her family and they love her; how they will do anything for each other. The love scenes and developing relationship between Mase and Absidy are realistic, hot and loving. I loved how Mase kept slipping Absidy iron to eat so she could help them keep the ghosts away. I loved how she protected everyone on the ship, how even when she did not like them or was scared of them, or mad at them she still wanted to help them. Plus the fact of how the author just dropped subtle clues but you could never really figure out everything that was going on. Just LOVED this book! If I could only recommend one book in 2016, it would be Sail by Lindsey Loucks. If you haven’t read it, you need to because it is awesome!
