Welcome, today we are talking with Pamela Humphrey! I would like to thank you for taking time out of your busy writing schedule to answer a few questions.
First, I think it’s important for readers to get a little insight on an author that they don’t necessarily get from your professional bio. You’d be surprised at what readers connect to, and sometimes the simplest ‘I can relate to that’ grabs their interest where nothing else can. Don’t answer anything you feel uncomfortable with.
Can you share a little something about Pamela Humphrey that’s not mentioned in your bio on your website?
I’m nine states shy of being in all 50 States. We have a sticker on the back of our SUV, and fill in the states we’ve driven through on our road trip.
What are your favorite:
Animal – Cats
Food – Steak, medium rare
Movie – It’s hard to choose just one, but Charade ranks near the top.
TV show – Psych
Actor – I still love old Cary Grant movies
Singer – Just one? I can’t do it.
Author – Jane Austen
What are your pet peeves?
More than just a pet peeve, I can’t stand flying insects with stingers. I once fell and broke my hand running from a bee.
Who is your hero?
There are so many people I’ve learned from and drawn strength from. My parents are at the top of that list.
Give us one thing on your bucket list.
I’d love to visit Scotland with my husband
What would readers find surprising about you?
I met my husband chatting online 20 years ago
If you could go to heaven, who would you visit?
Besides God/Jesus, I’d seek out Winston Churchill for a chat.
Any bad habits?
When I find a good book, I neglect most everything else in life.
What’s the funniest thing that ever happened to you?
This might not be the funniest, but I still laugh when I think about it. Late one night, I was in the shower. My husband unexpectedly poked his head in to tell me something. Startled, I screamed like an extra in a horror flick. He shook his head and walked away. Then I couldn’t stop laughing.
Now that our readers know a little bit more about Pamela Humphrey, let’s get down to the business of your book, Finding Claire, which was just released on December fifth. Congratulations! Readers will be interested to know that this is book one of the Hill Country Secrets Series!
How long did it take you from beginning to end before your novel was completely finished, and how did you decide on the topic and title?
I started writing on my phone while on a road trip on November 22, 2015. I published a little over a year later on December 5, 2016.
As we drove through the Texas Hill Country, I looked at the landscape and thought about how someone could really get lost out there. The idea of a woman in trouble finding a cabin popped in my head. I’d been researching family genealogy, so that intermingled, as well. The title came later. It’s the story goal on many levels.
How many other books do you plan in the series?
I have five more books mapped out so far.
Please tell us a little bit about Finding Claire.
Finding Claire is a mix of mystery, suspense, romance, and genealogy.
A woman wakes up in the back of a van and is taken to a small house in the middle of nowhere. The kidnappers shove her in a closet. Without a clue about her identity, she escapes, stumbling for miles through juniper trees and rocky landscape. After other attempts to locate a safe haven, she knocks at Alex’s cabin door when she sees a cat in the window.
The story unfolds from there as Alex, who is riddled with guilt from earlier events in his life, tries to protect her and help her find out who she is and why she was kidnapped.
What was your hardest challenge writing this book?
Since this was my first full-length novel, I had to work at pacing and making my characters feel real.
What in your opinion makes good chemistry between your leading characters?
With all the danger, they are raw and authentic with each other, and not everything is communicated in dialogue.
Any other works in progress?
If all goes as planned, Hill Country Secrets Books 2 & 3 will be released in 2017.
Any advice for aspiring authors?
Write. And find a tribe. Whether online or in real life, find a group of writers for support and encouragement. 10MinuteNovelists on Facebook is a great group.
Final words?
I love hearing from and interacting with readers.
