Young Adult Paranormal Romance
Rating: 4 Cups
Maggie has lived with her Aunt, a Freelance photographer, as long as she can remember. Theirs was a life of constant travel, never staying more than a few months in one place. Then, suddenly life changes for Maggie. Her Aunt gets a cushy overseas job, and Maggie is dropped off in New Orleans, there to spend her senior year with a long-time family friend Maggie has never met.
In New Orleans, Maggie quickly settles in but is bothered by creepy feelings she does not understand. A strong-willed girl, she does her best to ignore her paranoia. Then she meets Eran. Darkly, and deliciously handsome, Eran seems so familiar to Maggie, and yet, Maggie knows she has never encountered him before.
Maggie has always been different. She is a Messenger, able to relay messages between the realms of the living and the Dead. Always careful not to call attention to herself, she tries to avoid letting anyone get very close to her for fear that the true extent of her odd powers will become known. In the past, dreadful things have happened to those who have befriended her in any meaningful way. Eran is an enigma, seemingly able to appear and disappear at will. He saves her life several times before she finally begins to get a few cryptic answers from him. A terrible evil has descended upon New Orleans. Maggie finds herself the target of evil beings bent on her destruction, with Eran vowing his life to save hers.
Fast-paced, the story starts off strong and retains a tight rein on the momentum throughout. Maggie is such a stubborn, likeable girl. Her voice in this tale seems genuine, self-deprecating, and generous. I love her attitude and her unwillingness to take the easy path. This book mixes humor, mystery, and the supernatural into a satisfying blend that should appeal to both young and more mature readers. There are some fine supporting characters as well as, who we learn more about in the next installment. The concepts explored are unique ones. The author tells the story with such smooth execution that I was easily caught up in the action, while retaining a magical sense of wonder, never able to predict the next twist.
