The downturn in the economy has reached Becky Brandon’s doorstep in a most disturbing way, and she is forced to make a promise to her husband. She will curtail her shopping and wear what she already owns at least three times before buying something new, not realizing right away that this is going take a very long time.

It is a sad state of affairs for the Bank of London, and Luke Brandon feels very lucky that he has other well-heeled clients in the works. Now he just needs to keep one of those prospective clients a secret from his wife, until it is a sure thing, because Becky will most definitely flip when she finds out.

Becky is quite certain that she can throw the biggest surprise birthday party ever for Luke and do it single-handedly, well—sort of certain. It becomes glaring apparent, however, that to do so she is going to need money, lots and lots of money, which is something she seems to be running a little short on lately. The stress of trying to keep everything under wraps and not being allowed retail therapy has Becky a nervous wreck, and to top it all off, Luke is very worried about their daughter, Minnie’s behavior. Nothing is going as planned, including their house hunting, and as the big day looms, Becky is afraid that she may be forced to admit defeat.

I am sorry to say I am quite disappointed in the main character of this book. Becky’s driving need to shop is not something I consider funny; in fact I find it rather pathetic that she uses her daughter as a prop and an excuse to buy, buy, buy. Although there are humorous situations placed randomly throughout, the bulk of this story is just one lie layered on another. Luke himself is barely a side-note, and for a man as smart and successful as he is supposed to be, you would think he could do so much better for himself and his daughter than Becky Brandon (née Bloomwood).
