The caravan is not a safe place for a young girl with no mother. Nor is the world at large. Yet Adira does not know this fear. Her father, leader of the caravan, raises his daughter under the guise of a boy. Which for Adira means a wealth of freedom a girl would never know.
In their search for knowledge, Mika and Raph’s travels take them far from home and into a land completely foreign. Their stature alone singles them out as giants among men, which leads many to believe they are sacred messengers or prophets.
Beneath the robes and bindings Adira still has the heart of a girl, and it beats rapidly in the presence of Raph’s golden beauty. At first she believes herself in love. Yet time and circumstance change everything, and it is now Mika who fills her thoughts. Her beloved father is gone, along with her life in the caravan. All she has to hold onto is honoring her father’s wishes, even if it takes her from the life of freedom she once coveted above all else.
As unbelievable as it may seem, there are still women in this world who live a life of fear simply for being born female. Yet I feel Adira’s story belies all of that to be one of courage and incredible strength. What she may lack in physical strength, Adira more than makes up for with a fierce intelligence and sense of honor far beyond her years. Mika and Raph understand the power of Adira’s mind and her loyalty. Although like most men, they curse and praise it in equal measure. This is a book you could read multiple times, and find some nuance or gem of truth in every passage that you did not notice before.
