QUESTION: Which path did you take: Trad, Indie, or Hybrid? And what led you to that choice?
N.J. Walters said:
When I started out in this business back in 2004 e-books were considered non-traditional. Print was king and the big New York Publishers were pretty much the only game in town. Then along came e-book publishers, opening up the publishing world to a huge group of undiscovered authors. It also broadened the romance genre, bringing erotic romance into the mainstream. When my first book was published back in October 2004, e-book authors weren’t considered to be “real” authors by many. Now it’s become the norm.
Which leads me to Indie Publishing. Honestly, I wish I had the technical skills and the mindset to tackle this, but it is beyond me. It’s a huge opportunity for authors to be in charge of their destiny, to have editorial control over their brand and the last say on their cover and publishing schedule. It’s also a huge amount of work and costs a fair chunk of change, if it’s done right. Many of my author friends who indie publish work incredibly long hours, and that’s with paying others to do things like editing and formatting and covers. But in the end, it’s the author who can reap the monetary benefit. Under the traditional publishing model, the author is the last to get paid.
So while I’d love to try my hand at the Indie route, right now I am still traditionally published. It works for me. Maybe down the road I’ll become a hybrid, part indie and part traditional. It really is a brave new world out there in publishing. There are both good and bad things about the industry, and making a living has become more difficult in some ways, even though authors can be independent. All I know is that I’ll be around as long as readers keep on buying my books.
