You have to admit, there is nothing better than watching the evil villain of a story get exactly what’s coming to them. And I’m not necessarily talking about Underdog Syndrome either, although that’s a fantastic end to any love story. I’m talking about the over the top scenes in books or even films where something outrageous happens.
See, outrageous is what makes writing so much fun. If real life were truly exciting and outrageous we wouldn’t want to lose ourselves in a good book, we’d be out there living large and in charge. But most of life is pretty typically hum drum. Everyday we wake up, kiss the ones we love, go to a job, eat an average lunch, come home, spend time with the fam, and then maybe chill before bed. At which point the cycle begins again. And truthfully, its okay that real life is somewhat predictable. Can you imagine life in a fast paced Romantic Suspense? Or how about a Science Fiction world where everything is super technologically advanced and you’re on the run with a hot genetically enhanced humanoid?
Nope, that’s WHY we have books. They’re like portals to another world. So why not make those worlds just that much more vivid and hyper exciting?
In fact, I can think of a particularly hot scene in my very first book, Phoenix Rising, where the alpha female of a particularly nasty clique of women tries to run roughshod over our sweet leading lady. But instead of having her day and getting her way with hot bar owner Connor Archuleta, she’s humiliated and put so thoroughly in her place that there is no question in anyone’s mind which woman Connor prefers.
Now I also remember going through edits with that scene and having my editor say, “You know, Kaitlin, that’s pretty over the top. But I think the readers are going to love it.” And they have. Because that’s the kind of thing we all wish would happen in some way or another.
So tell me- What outrageous and maybe even cliché scene would you like to see in a book. Maybe you’ve already seen one that you loved. It can be anything, a proposal, a put down, a triumph, anything that you just know would never happen in real life. I’m going to pick my favorite response and that lucky winner will receive a free .pdf format copy of one of my books, their choice.
