The Symbolic Meaning of the Sunflower by Anne Carrole

In my latest book, The Cowboy’s Country Charm, Rusty Russell picks sunflowers for Kristy Winslow, the woman he is falling for, and takes her on a picnic. This is not particularly in character for this former Air Force pararescuer and reluctant cowboy, who feels he’s not worthy of someone’s love.
Sunflowers are native to both North and South America and were seen by native people as both good luck and a way to ward off evil spirits because of both the beauty of the flower and the edible seeds the flower provided. Poor Rusty needs all the good luck he can get.

In a Greek a myth linked to sunflowers, a nymph named Clytie was in love with the Sun God, Helios. He returned her love, for a while, but then he turned to another nymph, an age-old story. Jealous, Clytie told the other nymphs’ father, who then buried his daughter alive as punishment for falling for Helios. Helios was so angry with Clytie that he turned her into a heliotrope flower or the sunflower, part of the heliotrope family. But, Clytie’s love for Helios was so strong, she watched him move across the sky every day, just the way sunflowers follow the sun. Kristy can relate to Clytie’s feelings as she is just out of a serious relationship with someone who cheated on her.

Because of the color and the sun-shape of the flower, sunflowers have become symbols of warmth, positivity, and joy. All things that both Rusty and Kristy need in their lives.

But because sunflowers turn their faces to the sun and follow the sun as it crosses the sky, sunflowers have also become a symbol of loyalty and devotion in romantic relationships. They symbolize a promise of commitment and to always be there for someone, something Kristy needs, even if she says she doesn’t. Did Rusty realize when he picked those sunflowers for Kristy that he was making that statement to her? The subconscious is often at play in a romance.

The Cowboy’s Country Charm

“Just friends” isn’t working. Sparks are flying. Until dark clouds from the past threaten disaster. A friends-to-lovers story from award-winning author Anne Carrole.

Recent air force veteran and reluctant cowboy, Rusty “to the rescue” Russell, has set his sights on the attractive independent-minded event planner who says she’s too busy to get involved. That mindset is what makes Kristy Winslow a perfect candidate for a casual relationship. Because with past traumas still haunting him, he doesn’t dare commit to anything more. But keeping her at arm’s length is more difficult than he bargained for.

Kristy Winslow has no desire to date again, since her last relationship went terribly wrong. Besides she needs to focus on her new career opportunity because failure is not an option. But the charming cowboy’s persistence and promises of a no-strings fling has Kristy throwing caution to the wind. If only she can keep her mind on the job and her heart from getting broken by this complicated but intriguing redhead.

Love is in the air, but will demons from the past pull them apart or make them stronger together?
