So, I have a slight obsession”¦

So, I have a slight obsession with numbers. This is a truth I’ve known for a long time. I’ve accepted and embraced it, much at the eye-rolling of my beloved hubby. With any OCD, I know it can be annoying. I just can’t help it. Part of my fascination stems from my science background, but numbers have been revered, feared and studied for hundreds of years. I’m in good company.

For the most part, I’ve embraced the power behind numbers in my life, both personally and in my writing, without realizing it. I have three kids and every member of my family, including my pets, has a five-letter name. If you look closely at my Royal Pride books, you can pick up some references to the number three also, but my new series, the Wild Hunt, is a perfect avenue to indulge my love of numbers.

While many flavors of mythology (Celtic, Welsh, and Scottish, for example) are different, most share the same themes and the significance of numbers. Two of the most important are three and nine (and its multiples), but nearly all have a meaning tied to it. Here are some of the ones I’ve embraced while writing Hunter Betrayed, book 1 of the Wild Hunt series.

Three is considered the first sacred number. The triskel, a design composed of three spirals, signifies the three-layered nature of a human soul and is itself a central figure in ancient Celtic symbolism.

Nine is another sacred number as it is the multiple of three by itself.

Seventeen is a number associated with the cycles of the visible moon, particularly the new moon. On this day of the moon’s cycle, many influential and monumental events were thought to have taken place.

Twenty-seven is both sacred numbers multiplied, which supposedly triples its potency. Twenty-seven also signifies the number of warriors comprising a war-band and the number of the members of a Celtic chieftain’s royal court.

And as for the number five“¦it signifies the family unit and order in Irish tradition, because of the five provinces of Ireland and also the five laws imposed on provincial Irish kings.

So, I will continue to embrace my OCD proudly! It’s tradition.
