If self-published, was your book(s) published in e-format, paperback, audio, or some combination of these? What services did you purchase before or after publication? Have you recovered those costs through sales? Do you have any regrets about self-publishing?

No regrets. I’m diving in headfirst. My books will be available in all formats.

My books were in all formats except audio when self published. Though I’ve now acquired audio contracts on my self-published work, or some of it anyway. I spent money on cover art and editorial help on my self-published work. Yes, I have recovered my costs.

I have ebook and paperback available for my readers. I had the books edited, formatted, proof read and professional covers made. Yes, I made the cost of those back almost immediately. I have no regrets to self-publishing. In fact I am a strong advocate. I am doing an RWA class in September called; How I self-published my way to PAN. I don’t understand why an author would give their work away to these e-publishers when they could triple their income as well as have total control over their work! I’m trying to convert everyone. LOL.

I only published my books in e-format because, at the time, audio wasn’t yet available to indie authors, and because my print editions from Berkley were still widely available in the used market. I will be doing print editions of the novellas I’ll be indie publishing, and may go back and do an audio edition of my one remaining indie novel. Because my books were originally published by a trad publisher, they had already been through the editorial process so I did not have to hire an editor or copy editor. I proofread the digital versions myself and did the formatting, but I hired someone to do the covers. I earned back that investment within a month of publishing the books. I have zero regrets about self-pubbing.

Books are in e-format and paperback. Wee William’s is being recorded now for audible. I didn’t pay for anything to publish first book. All subsequent books however I have hired a professional cover artist and I do have an editor now. And yes, it has paid for itself a hundred times over. The investment has exceeding any money spent. And I don’t spend but maybe $150 a year on advertising.
