Sharing the Love…interview with Maura Anderson

WHen Karen asked me to blog for three days, she said, “Bring some friends!”  So here’s a new friend of mine, Maura Anderson who took time to answer a few questions.

Who is Maura and what does she write?

I’m a mom, wife, software engineer, author, editor, crafter, crazy cat lady, motorcycle rider and reader who currently lives in the Pacific Northwest. I’ve got a hugely varied background and a large number of interests.

I’m actually a published non-fiction author who then turned to fiction. I write various flavors of romance ““ mostly erotic romance though that varies in sub-genre. My favorites are paranormal and contemporary and I’ve recently written some male/male erotic romance that will be out in September. But the unifying theme between all my stories is “love’.

  1. Tell us a little about your newest release

My current release is called Tort & Retort and is out from Aspen Mountain Press. It’s a short story that I wrote while I was reviewing and is based on a woman who is a lawyer by day and an erotic romance reviewer by night. She feels she has to hide this from her boss and love because of the way romance and erotic romance is often perceived. Little does she know that he has some secrets of his own.

In September I’ll have two stories in the Hot Comforts anthology from ManLove Romance Press. These are both contemporary male/male stories themed around food. Giving Thanks features a chef who comes out to his family at Thanksgiving, only to have his father punch and disown him. Bittersweet is the story of a gay erotic chocolatier afraid to love again after being rejected by a lover who couldn’t see below the surface.

  1. How does Mr. Maura feel about you writing?

He’s all for it as long as I try to get housework done too. He’s actually quite supportive even though the male/male stories give him the willies and he won’t read them. He pimps my stories to his co-workers and practically stops strangers on the street. I’m really lucky ““ I’ve heard so many stories of family and spouses that aren’t supportive at all.

His goal in life is for me to make enough writing that he can become a kept man.

  1. The idea of Friday Flash Fiction, (I’m so behind!) how did this come up and why?

I have SO many ideas and story concepts and I kept getting distracted by them. I’d be trying (really) to focus on my current project but my muse kept trying to go after other ideas because they were newer and shinier. Sorta like a magpie.

But I didn’t want to forget the good ideas. And I wanted to try out some ways to achieve certain emotions in a reader but didn’t happen to have a chance in the real WIP I had going. So I decided to challenge myself and let the muse play in a controlled environment by putting up a Friday free read flash. This lets the muse play, lets my readers or potential editors see the range I’m capable of, and lets me be accountable to update my blog at least once a week. It’s a win-win and I’ve not missed in 40 weeks, though I’m a day or two late sometimes”¦.

  1. If you could tell your boss one thing, what would it be and why?

My Evil Day Job boss? Actually we get along pretty well. Maybe that if he wears shorts with black socks to work again, I’m going to stage a fashion intervention

And now for an excerpt from Tort & Retort:

Tort & Retort

by Maura Anderson

Excerpt 1

Tyler Monroe’s considerable presence seemed to fill the room just as his well-built body filled the doorway. She quickly looked back down at her laptop but couldn’t resist a peek at her mentor’s tight ass as he walked over to shut the door leading into the rest of their small office suite.

Damn. It really is too bad that he’s off limits. An ass that fine just begs for some exploratory nibbles.

She managed not to drool and forced her eyes away just in time to avoid being caught ogling him. At least the agenda for their meeting provided a convenient distraction from her lustful thoughts.

Throughout the meeting, it took an act of supreme willpower to keep her mind on business and off Tyler’s gorgeous toffee colored eyes, or what it might feel like to run her hands through his short dark brown hair.

After they exchanged updates on their various projects and covered the few other agenda items, she gathered her items up, already thinking of the preparations she needed to make before this afternoon’s round of client meetings.

“Umm, Gayle?” Tyler sounded uncharacteristically hesitant.

“Yes? Did I forget something?” She mentally reviewed the meeting agenda. “I’m sure I covered everything.”

“You covered everything on the agenda, but I have something else I want to talk to you about.” He glanced at his own laptop, then closed it and looked at Gayle instead. “Do you remember our agreement when you came to work for me?”

His unsmiling question made her immediately nervous. What had she done? Did she screw something up and not even realize it?

She erected the confident front she’d developed during law school and subsequently perfected during her daily interactions with overly egotistical geeks. She straightened the coat of her red linen suit and squared her shoulders. “I remember we agreed that you’d take a chance and hire me right out of school, unproven, if I’d take a chance and work for a lawyer that just started his own niche law firm.”

Try as she might, she simply could not come up with anything for Tyler to be unhappy about. There was the incident a few days ago where she’d told off yet another game developer who thought he could play Fantasy Fornication with her, instead of discussing the possibility of patenting his new algorithm. But Tyler had cheered her on for that when she’d told him what happened.

She realized she was fidgeting with her pen and set it carefully down on the conference table before she forced herself to sit back in her chair and relax. Or at least pretend to relax.

Tyler’s sharp eyes were sure to detect her tense hands and clenched jaw, and know she wasn’t really at ease. Remaining silent, she waited for him to finish his torment and just tell her what was on his mind.

Sometimes he took far too much delight in dangling people from hooks and watching them twitch.

“I’ve decided it’s time to make some changes.” Tyler looked down at the file folder he’d carried in with him but hadn’t opened during their meeting. “Past time actually.”

Gayle gulped. This had all the hallmarks of a pink slip. But why?

Redemption by Kate L. Mary May 2019

Nearly a year after Asher Kimura swooped into Athens and saved Scarlett and her friends, the group has settled into a routine that almost feels like a real life. But when an altercation on the street turns deadly, they’re forced to head out west to lay low until things have settled down.

After a lifetime in the polluted world the Luddites have created, Scarlett is looking forward to seeing the sun in all its splendor for the very first time. Too bad the heat, dust, and utter lawlessness of the west leave a lot to be desired. But she’s determined to enjoy both her time with Asher and the break from the constant threat of living in Columbus.

It doesn’t take long for the group to realize that corruption knows no borders. Drugs, slavery, and forced prostitution are only the tip of the iceberg when Asher comes face to face with the demons from his past, leaving Scarlett to wonder if he’ll make it out in one piece. https://coffeetimeromance.com/redemption-by-kate-l-mary/?feed_id=3018&_unique_id=66ede5ea8172c&utm_source=Instagram&utm_medium=KarenneLyn&utm_campaign=FS%20PosterRedemption%20by%20Kate%20L.%20Mary55937 May 2019 Nearly a year after Asher Kimura swooped into Athens and saved Scarlett and her friends, the group has settled into a routine that almost...

Merybourne Manor is a lovely little country village where Aliza Bentaine’s family and friends are being terrorized by gryphons. She has already lost one sister to the horde, so it is a huge relief to see Riders coming to their rescue.

The bond between dragon and man is as close as family for Alastair Daired. Daired’s take this honor very seriously, and Alastair will fight to the death to for his dragon and his people.

Aliza is very proud of the life she and her family lead, which makes Daired’s attitude towards her incredibly aggravating, and confusing. Aliza also tries to pass off her sense of unease to the gryphon scare, but deep down she worries that there is worse to come. Daired finds his feelings towards Aliza baffling, and she is in his thoughts constantly. When their world erupts, Aliza’s safety consumes him, but with terror bearing down on them the sacrifice to come is beyond all comprehension.

Aliza and Daired come to life under Ms. White’s expert hand. Their world is a technicolor of verdant greens and fiery reds, and you can almost smell the dragon’s smoky essence. She totally captures the heart of her readers with characters who lead you on an adventure that does not stop. This story enthralls with its world of fantastic creatures, bold personalities, and heart-wrenching action!

Mad Tinker Chronicles: Volume 1

The world told her No. She didn’t listen.

Madlin Errol is heiress to the greatest fortune in Tellurak. Her father, the Mad Tinker, has built an empire by crafting devices that no one else in the world could match. Madlin grew up spoiled, given everything she could wish for: the finest tools, all the raw metals she could ask for, and a workshop of her very own. Yet in her sleep, she lives another life, in another world.

Korr...a world where humans are subjugated, working menial jobs or even enslaved. The ruling kuduks treat them like talking animals. In that world, Madlin is known as Rynn, a girl who grew up without her parents, mired in the depths of an underground city, sleeping in a boiler room. A Winter's Romance Anthology by GL Robinson
A Winter’s Romance: A Regency Anthology on preorder now on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Winters-Romance-Regency-Anthology-ebook/dp/B0DG3R12L1

I am GL Robinson, originally from the UK, but have spent most of my adult life in the USA, having married an American I met in Brussels, where I was working after the UK joined the Common Market (as it was then) in 1973. He always tells the story that he’d been sent over to Europe for six weeks to “help out a guy”. He arrived with one suitcase; he ended up going home five years later with a wife and three children!

My sister and I were educated in a convent boarding school in the south of England, because our parents were in Africa. That sounds crazy now, but it wasn’t unusual at the time. Nearly all the other girls there had parents who worked abroad. Francine and I used to giggle over Georgette Heyer under the covers after lights-out, and when she died unexpectedly in 2018, I woke up with a Regency Romance whole and entire in my head. Having never written anything other than academic papers before that (I was a French Professor), I sat up and wrote that first novel in two weeks. I think now it was my way of grieving, and it gave me such joy I haven’t stopped since. To date, I have 16 Regencies live on Amazon, and one on pre-order. They are all dedicated to my sister.

When I was asked if I would like to join in an Anthology with a short story on the theme of Winter, my thoughts went immediately to Christmas. The confluence of pagan and Christian traditions on our celebration of the holiday has always fascinated me. The early Christians arriving in Britain had the good sense not to try to eliminate deep-rooted pagan beliefs and festivals, but give them what we would now call a “spin”.  The date of Christmas itself was chosen to coincide with the spring equinox, wildly celebrated in the pagan world. It would take too long to go into all the many integrated traditions now, but just one example is the holly and the ivy.

Pagan peoples looked on holly as a masculine plant, its red berries a symbol of fertility in the depths of winter. The clinging ivy was considered a female...

Ada: The last thing I expected after moving to Whispering Springs, Oregon was to fall head over heels for Ulgan, the sweet and sexy orc bakery owner. I’ve had my eye on him for months, and it makes my heart race when I find out that my feelings aren’t one sided. Am I ready to trust Ulgan and let him into my life, or will a secret that he’s been keeping from me tear us apart?

Ulgan: I knew from the second Ada entered my bakery that she’s my fated mate. Humans don’t have fated mates, so how am I supposed to prove to her that we are meant for each other? Months have gone by since I first scented her, and I’m through with waiting. It’s time for me to woo my beautiful mate and show Ada that the one thing missing in her life is an orc to care for her.

Nocturnal by Clio Evans

Dark Paranormal Romance, Monster Romance

I was his toxic obsession. He was my sadistic monster.

Nora: When I took a job at St. Thorns university as a psychology professor, I encountered something – someone – unexplainable. Fascinating. And deadly.

Alec Briar had the eyes of a killer.

He’s a botanist who would rather rot in his greenhouse alone than deal with students, professors, or me. When a monster stalks me, our relationship becomes corrupted in ways that bring us closer together, for better or worse. He has secrets – ones that will destroy him if he discovers the truth…

Our minds twist to protect our souls, and Alec’s is the most warped of all. The only way to save him is to hurt him and accept the damnation doing so will bring.

Alec: She was deadlier than belladonna, and yet I cannot resist her.

Nora Woulfe has become my infatuation. As she pushes me to my breaking point, we spiral down a path that will be our downfall. A monster is trying to steal what is mine, and I will hunt him to the bitter end. Even if I have to use her to draw him out…

Viscount’s Christmas Runaway by Audrey Harrison
A Winter’s Romance: A Regency Anthology on preorder now at Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Winters-Romance-Regency-Anthology-ebook/dp/B0DG3R12L1

Hello, thank you for having me. I am Audrey Harrison, an English writer of Regency romance from the North West of England. I live halfway between Liverpool and Manchester, in a very working class town called Wigan. I’ve been indie publishing since 2011, it started because traditional publishers told me that there was no market for Regency romance! I am married with two grown-up children and two gorgeous grandchildren, plus a mad foster dog (hoping to adopt her) and two granddogs. Life is usually chaotic, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

A shy child, I lost myself in books. They gave me the friends and adventures I needed and I have never stopped reading. I would write stories as a child, resulting in my first novel when I was sixteen, but life, family, and mortgages meant that I had no opportunity to follow that path. I think I wouldn’t have appreciated it as much if I had been younger, whereas now I feel very privileged to be able to follow my dream.

I’ve always wanted to write, but people from a working class background don’t become authors. I worked in the public sector and then a hospital stay and the chance at voluntary redundancy was the prod that I needed. It took a few more years before I published because I had no idea about ebooks, but I have never regretted a day of taking the risk and indie publishing. I would love to achieve more, write more and build my readership. I love what I do but I never take it for granted and am always humbled that readers enjoy my stories.

I have nearly forty Regency romances available on ebook or paperback. This venture of being part of an anthology is something new and exciting to me. I will always suffer from imposter syndrome, but the chance to work with five other talented authors was too tempting an opportunity to miss. I love that the stories are all based around winter, the perfect time for snuggling down with a nice book!

A Worthy Alteration by Judith Hale Everett

Peter Holydale, Viscount Windon, is a connoisseur of beauty. The lovely face of a beautiful woman will inspire him to all sorts of gallantry—except marriage. Somehow, he cannot bring himself to wish to offer for any of the lovely ladies he has admired over the years, and all of them end up marrying someone else. But he continues to pursue beautiful women, and this laudable pastime takes him all the way to county Durham, where he means to pay court to Miss Tyndall, his latest object of admiration. But a chance encounter with the governess—whose beauty is hidden by her severe dress and hairstyle—thwarts his purpose, for he cannot seem to get the drab governess out of his mind...

Excerpt

Lord Windon kicked at a stone. Perhaps he would offer for Miss Tyndall—if not during the house party, sometime in the near future—for besides being angelically pretty, she was the most darling, the sweetest, most captivating—

His mental image of this paragon vanished away as his gaze fell upon one in the flesh, just emerging from the door to the inn. She wore a heavy, fur-lined cape over a blue woolen pelisse, but the countenance framed by the hood testified to the perfections hidden beneath the layers of her clothing. Her face had an elfin quality, the lips a cupid’s bow, the eyes a deep and trusting brown. Dusky curls peeped from the recesses of the hood, and the gloved hands that held a portmanteau before her were small and elegant.

Lord Windon’s view was obscured a moment as the stage lumbered out of the yard, but when it had passed, he saw that she was speaking with the ostler, who shook his head in answer to her inquiry. The lovely eyes were downcast a moment as the lips frowned, and when she again raised her eyes, her distress was evident, even from across the inn yard. Another inquiry was productive of still more consternation, and Windon knew his moment had come.

A Winter's Romance with Christina Dudley
A Winter’s Romance: A Regency Anthology on preorder now on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Winters-Romance-Regency-Anthology-ebook/dp/B0DG3R12L1

Can blindness and deception keep them from love? When scandalous James Thornton suffers a hunting accident, he is carried broken and unconscious to Ardenmere, where schoolteacher Eliza Blinker is spending her holidays. All hands are required to nurse the patient, but for Eliza’s protection Lady Arden insists she pose as an older, plainer woman. Blinded as he is, Thornton may be told anything, after all. But what if love truly is blind, and he begins to care for Eliza despite what he’s been led to believe?

“Epiphany Day” is a short story found in A Winter’s Romance: a Regency Anthology.

Excerpt

The maid trailed her to the bottom of the stairs like a faithful mastiff and hovered while Eliza gave instructions to the footman Hoskins. Then, when she glanced toward the drawing room doors, Kirby said, “Lady Arden says I am always to accompany you, if you are a-going in there. ‘Don’t you let her be alone with him, Kirby,’ she told me.”

“Well then, together it is. But perhaps we need not go in. I don’t hear anything now.”

As if to spite her, a protracted moan struck their ears, one ending in a sudden whuff.

Oh, dear. Suppose he had rolled from the sofa and could not right himself? Or that he had pulled off his bandages and was dragging himself across the room in search of light? Eliza found herself regretting her earlier bravado about broken bones. What precisely had she imagined she knew about injuries? Especially injuries the magnitude of Mr. Thornton’s!

Taking a deep breath and nodding at Kirby, she opened the doors quietly and crept around the side of the lacquered screen. To her great relief, the man still lay upon the sofa, his bandages intact, though one hand fumbled at them.

“No, no,” said Eliza, hurrying forward. “You mustn’t. Your eyes must not be exposed.”

Though she had not touched him, his hand froze in its exploration.

“Can you hear me, sir?” she asked. “Do you understand me?”

There was a long, long pause. Was he too muddled to speak?
