Hmm. When starting to write this, I sat and looked at a blank screen for far too long. I wanted to tell some charming story about Valentine’s Day. I wanted to share about a time when the man I love, my husband for nearly 23 years and my soul mate, made some wonderful grand gesture that warmed the cockles of my heart.
Nope. I got nothing. I thought maybe he did. This is the way that conversation went:
“Honey, can you remember a time at Valentine’s day when you did something sweet and romantic that I really loved?”
“Uhhh. No.”
“Yeah, that’s what I thought.”
He laughed. “That’s pretty sad isn’t it?”
Remember, this wonderful Irishman is my soul mate. I should have one story right?
The answer to that is unequivocally no. I love hearts and flowers just as much as the next woman, but big romantic gestures can be just that, gestures. My life is not richer because of something that my husband does for me on Valentine’s Day; it is richer because of the stuff he does every day. He fixes things. He does the dishes or other chores when I want to get back to writing. He indulges me when I get pissed off about something and need to vent (usually). He thinks up blog topics. He loves me well. In short, he is my partner in everything. While he isn’t perfect, he owns my heart.
Maybe this year he will remember that I love irises better than roses but if he doesn’t, I don’t care. What he chooses to do on Valentine’s Day really doesn’t matter. Shh, you don’t need to share that with him””a card and flowers is still nice. I wouldn’t say no to a nice dinner either.
