Hi! I’m Harper Michaels, and I’m so excited to share my work with you on Coffee Time Romance! Hopefully, you’ll check it out. I’ll begin by telling you a little about myself and my journey into writing my first novel, Falling for You.
I was born and raised in South Georgia, near the Florida border. I grew up in a small town where the biggest thing to do was ride around the Wal-Mart parking lot or go to the movie theatre that played only two movies, most of which had been released months earlier. As a kid, books were my escape. I loved building forts in the woods and chasing after my cousins, but nothing beat escaping into a different world through words. Gradually, my taste in books changed. My obsession with The Babysitter’s Club gave way to an obsession with Nora Roberts, and from there any romance I could get my hands on. Now, I read a lot of contemporary romance that would probably make the characters in those old novels blush. I like lust and steam in my romance novels, and that’s also what I like to write. After all, reading should be an escape so why not make it as fun as possible?
What level of spice do you like in your romance? I’m a health care worker and mama to two little ones by day, so I need to read through novels pretty quick. I like the instant heat of the short novellas out there, but I also love the slow burn that a good-enemies-to-lovers or friends -to-lovers story can offer.
Falling for You doesn’t punch you in the face with heat at the beginning, but it can scorch you. It may take a minute to get to the heat, but when it does the novel is burn-your-house-down hot. Ronnie is an eighteen-year-old senior at Riverton Prep, a prestigious school attended by kids of the rich and famous of the South. Only the richest of the rich can enter the hallowed halls of the once conservative prep school. Ronnie is the principal’s daughter, and an outsider among her peers. She’s in love with romance novels, just as I was at her age, and not willing to settle for anything less than the perfect book boyfriend.
Sawyer is an outsider also, but for different reasons. Not long ago, he was thrust into the middle of a family scandal. Now, he’s persona non grata with the local community. He’s cynical and a little broken, like all good heroes should be. When he rescues Ronnie, neither of them can be sure that he has what it takes to be her hero. Their attraction is immediate and combustible, but their faith in each other takes time.
I love to create characters that don’t know their own inner strength, and that evolve throughout the story. Throwing them into situations out of their comfort zone gives them a chance to find out who they are, and to become the heroes of their own story. Falling in love is a remarkable thing, and I can’t imagine a more amazing genre than romance to write in. Ronnie and Sawyer are able to find their happily-ever-after, and to make each other a better person in the process.
I am obsessed with creating strong female characters that show that women don’t necessarily need the man to do the rescuing. Don’t get me wrong. I love a good alpha male, but women are so underestimated that I think we even amaze ourselves sometimes. After all, do you know of any men that could endure childbirth? I don’t think so. Women are immensely capable of rescuing themselves and also leading in the bedroom. There’s nothing more sexy than a confident woman. That’s why Ronnie evolves into a women who is confident in her sexuality and her abilities.
I am currently writing a novella set at a university in Savannah, where I lived for several years. The Growing Pains series (Falling for You is the first in this series), will transition to this university also. My latest novella, Keeping You, will be released by the end of September. It is a brothers-best friend story that is melt your panties hot! I can’t wait to introduce everyone to Sophie and Liam.
Falling for You is currently on sale for $0.99 on Amazon until Saturday, August 7, and is available for free on Kindle Unlimited. Feel free to ask my any questions you have about my novel or anything romance! I still read anything and everything, so let me know what your favorite current novel is. I’m a fan of Sara Ney, Amelia Knight, and a few thousand other romance authors. I hope you get a chance to read Falling for You and if you do, feel free to post a review or let me know your opinion. Thanks so much!
