It is also one of those “books of the heart” because it was actually written jointly with my late husband who was of Scots ancestry and very proud of that fact. He also had many years in law enforcement as his career and wrote of this environment in the most authentic and realistic way!
When we lived in central California, near Marysville, north of Sacramento, we were in a rural area served by the Yuba County Sheriff’s Department. On the force was a female deputy that we both admired greatly. She was the inspiration or role model of January in this story–kind of like Kate Beckett is for Rick Castle in the Castle TV series 😉 although we didn’t actually go on patrol with “Deputy Virginia.”
In the story, January is of Irish ancestry and quite proud of the fact. Her training officer, nemesis and eventual true love, Thad Gunn is Scots, actually born in the old country. His painful childhood and youth is a factor in the story as is his fierce pride for his heritage. I truly love these two characters and they became intensely real to me during the course of writing the book. We worked and revised, had parts critiqued (Sue-Ellen was one of our crit partners in this work as we were for her book that eventually became “Highlander in My Bed”, her first Allie Mackay title!)
Anyway the book was about three-quarters done when Jim, my husband, passed away very suddenly and unexpectedly. It was a couple of years before I could get back into the manuscript and attempt to finish it. I really wanted to get it published but the final revisions, cleaning up the timeline that had become chaotic and doing the last few chapters was a challenge but one I am very glad I took on!
Anyway, Gunn is an old Scottish clan complete with their own tartan. My wonderful cover artist got a swatch of it into the cover art, and the overall effect is one of my favorite covers. I thought she (Delle Jacobs) captured the idea to the cat’s meow!
I’ll include the cover in my next post which will be the first excerpt from this book!
Slainte! Gwynn Morgan
