Alex Thorne is a Professor of Archaeology with a loose relationship with morals. He has occasionally been known to borrow an artifact, but he always gives it back. He has gone to a lot of effort to get Catriona McTaggert a job at the university he works at, as well as make sure the only available place she can stay is at his mansion in the woods. He is quite sure she will kill him since he is the reason she was arrested for suspicion of smuggling antiquities twelve years ago.

Catriona McTaggert really thought she was over Alex Thorne. After refusing to explain anything to her after her arrest, she left him. They had been together for two years at the time and were living together and she was sure the next step was marriage. Then he would not give her the truth, so she walked out and never looked back. She did not see him again until he showed up at a family gathering with her cousin Logan where she gut-punched him.

Their attraction is still there and stronger than ever. Alex knows this is probably the stupidest thing he has ever done, but he can not seem to help himself. Once the sexual tension is broken with a “poke” in an empty alcove of a lecture hall, Catriona decides to use what she has to get some truth out of him. He has moments of weakness afterwards when he lets tidbits out, so she decides to chip away at his defenses a little at a time. A threat from his recent past emerges to make him want to chase her away to protect her but she is not going anywhere this time.

I really enjoyed this book. Alex came across as your typical wealthy stud who knows he has a very pretty package. Then his layers unfold until you find the real Alex and you realize he has not had the easy life his attitude portrays. Catriona somehow always knew there was good in Alex even when Alex did not think there was. She just has to convince him and, with some help from her family, they work to overcome all the secrets of his past together.
