Welcome, today we are talking with TK Lawyer! I would like to thank you for taking time out of your busy writing schedule to answer a few questions. First, let’s delve into who you are. Some of the questions may be untraditional but you’d be surprised at what readers connect to, and sometimes the simplest ‘I can relate to that’ grabs their interest where nothing else can.
Can you share a little something about TK Lawyer that’s not mentioned in your bio on your website?
Despite what I write, I am a very spiritual person. I believe in no harm to others and karma (which I call cause and effect). I believe in helping others because that’s what we are here for. If I can spread some joy and happiness in every interaction then I have done my job. I am here to help others and to bring hope and light into their world. I hope that I am accomplishing at least a little of that.
How long have you been writing?
I’ve actually been writing since 2014 but my first book wasn’t published until 2016 when I picked up a traditional publisher who published Nightfall. Writing is a challenge for me because I work a full-time job and I don’t get a lot of time to write plus there’s the marketing side I have to do too. But when I am writing, I get in the zone and the script looks like a movie projected in front of my eyes. I love it and I hope my readers do, too.
What have you found most challenging about it?
Actually doing the writing because my life is so complicated and I have such little time to spend writing, marketing, and networking. Not only do I have a full-time day job which gives me the money to be an author and attend book shows but I am also married and a mom to a sweet American Foxhound named Molly. She has her own hashtag #mollylawyerrocks I lead a very busy life and people are always astounded that I have 15 books out there now. I try so hard to keep my readers entertained but it’s hard to write a book anymore. Plus I have to keep up with Facebook and my fan group- the Kittens- so it’s a lot for me some days but I do enjoy what I do and I don’t see me ever going back to just my working my day job with nothing else on my plate.
What does writing do for you? Is it fun, cathartic, do you get emotional?
Once I am in the zone, I feel like I am telling someone’s story. I know it sounds strange but the characters actually write the story and I am just a conduit for their voices. I put myself into the stories too and get emotional. If I start crying, I know it’s a good book and that’s what I want for my readers- to feel emotions and to see the story played out in front of them like a movie screen. That’s what happens to me when I am writing a story.
Describe what your writing routine looks like. Are you disciplined with a strict schedule or do you have to be in the mood?
Noooo. I am not disciplined at all. LOL. I wish I was, actually, but I know me better than that. I don’t like schedules and I can’t write under pressure. I write when I feel like writing. I have to be in the mood to write or nothing good will come out of me and you won’t want to read what is on the paper. I am also a pantser. Sometimes I attempt a basic outline for the book but I am always straying and going off the outline in different directions. The characters, basically, tell me where to go and then, magically, a book is created.
Did you go into writing thinking that it would be a hobby or a job?
I wanted it to be a job but it’s become more like a hobby for me. It’s very hard to make any money at writing. Most writers don’t make much of an income- at least not where they can write full time and live off their profits. I tend to be very generous and I do a lot of book shows, which ends up costing a lot of money. Still, I love what I do and I absolutely love my readers!
What inspires you?
Just about anything, really. Sometimes I get inspiration for a scene from hearing something funny on the radio or from hearing a story someone told. I might get inspiration from just watching people relate to each other. An author can get inspiration from just about anything. That’s why the old saying “be careful what you say, it might end up in a book” is very real. We use real life and reality in our books a lot. That’s what makes our stories good and so relatable.
Let’s move on and give readers some insight into your personal life.
What are your pet peeves?
Getting interrupted while I am in the zone of writing. It takes a lot for me, anymore, to sit down and write but once I do, please don’t interrupt me. My hubby bothers me all the time when I write and it upsets me. It’s a disruption and then I have to find out where I was and write from there to get back into the zone.
Who is your hero?
Hmmm.. This is an interesting question. I don’t really have a hero but I guess if I had to name one, it would be Archangel Michael. He emulates everything I would love to be. His compassion, his great love, his dedication and his humbleness even though he is well known is so amazing. He is a true leader but he doesn’t know it. He doesn’t realize how humanity feels about him and that’s what makes him so approachable and respected.
Give us one thing on your bucket list.
Well… I don’t really have a bucket list but if I had one, visiting England would be on it. I am drawn to England and would love to visit London and maybe some smaller towns around London while I am there.
What would readers find surprising about you?
I’m a bit psychic but I don’t tell people this because everyone has their own ideas and their own beliefs. I truly believe in spirituality, other realms, past lives. Anything is possible and my mind is open to all possibilities. I have seen spirits and they communicate with me. I think this might horrify some people but I am okay with it. I am not crazy. I am just me and I am a good person though I might be a little nuts in trying to bring joy and happiness to anyone around me because life is tough and we don’t need any more negativity.
If you could go to heaven, who would you visit?
My mom. I miss her dearly. She was my best friend and cheerleader. She was my rock. Unfortunately I didn’t know it, at the time when she was alive. Its things like that you don’t realize until they are gone.
Now that our readers know who TK Lawyer is let’s get down to the business of your book, Escapade.
Please tell us a little bit about, Escapade.
Escapade is a fun, fast read. I’ve re-read it several times and am so happy with the way it came out. When I wrote my first draft, it was so many years ago. It took a long time for me to come back to this book and once I read the draft, I literally, deleted everything and started anew. I wanted a book to emulate Michael’s fun side but also his serious, sometimes perceived as cold side. That’s why the female protagonist in the book is fire and he is ice. Michael can be very business-like in his dealings with humans because he is so busy and he doesn’t have time to word things the way humans take that extra care/time to make sure our words don’t offend. He says what he means and he delivers his message expeditiously. The way you take his message is up to you. He makes no apologies for what he says.
What was your hardest challenge writing this book?
Writing a book worthy of Archangel Michael. My books with angels have sex in them. Yes- I have been criticized for this, even blasphemed for it. They are not Christian angels. That’s not what I write. I write fantasy and fiction. They are purely fun entertainment. But with Michael’s book, I know he has a lot of fans so I had to be careful how I wrote his book. The sex scenes are not as descriptive and they are tasteful. I know he would be proud of this book and how I made him look. It’s a fun adventure story and I hope people will pick it up. It’s unlike any book on Archangel Michael you’ve ever read.
What kind of research did you have to do?
I looked up Michael’s group of angels that he works with because I didn’t know their name so I could place them on stage with him at Wingtopia. The band of mercy became his backup singers which I thought was hilarious but awesome, too. I didn’t do a lot of research for this book because I’ve written angel books before and I’ve read a lot about Archangel Michael. I just added a lot of creativity and fun scenes for him to entertain readers in.
What in your opinion makes good chemistry between your leading characters?
Different personalities that challenge each other but in a good way. It’s best when one learns from the other or the personalities complement each other. Everyone has their own personal strengths and weaknesses so if one is strong where the other one isn’t, that’s a good mix. That’s what happens in my book Escapade. Where Archangel Michael is strong, Teresa isn’t and vice versa. Their personalities complement each other very well.
Any other works in progress?
Yes, I am writing a rather unique book called The Angels’ Ex-Wives Club. It stars Archangel Michael, Teresa and Archangel Raphael. The concept came to me because humans are complex and who’s to say that a relationship with an angel will always end up as a happily ever after? We don’t live fairy tale lives. We live in reality and not everything is as wonderful, rainbow filled, starry nights. We live with adversity, negativity, barriers and challenges so what would happen if humans can’t deal with an angel relationship? Angels live in a different reality and that can sometimes be frustrating to us humans who feel things angels don’t. So, I wanted to write a book as to the “what if” part.
Any advice for aspiring authors?
If you have an idea, you want to write and you have the energy and commitment to dedicate to doing more than just writing, just do it. Writing is not an endeavor for everyone because it takes a lot to be an author. I’ve heard from readers how they marvel at our craft but it is a worthy endeavor if you have an idea and you want to share it with the world. You will meet people you might never have met otherwise. I have fans and readers now I would never have met under normal circumstances and I love it. I love how my words can entertain strangers. It’s so amazing. There are really no words to describe how truly remarkable that is.
