Interview with Rowan from Wildcard

Passion’s the pot when Rowan Kerr draws the Wildcard.

Blurb: Though she lives in a world of Beyonce and iPhones, Indra Fox thinks she may be an alien. She’s too strong, too fast, and heals too quickly to be merely human. But she doesn’t know for sure, because her parents refused to tell her. Nor would they explain why she — and her equally superhuman best friend, Diana Newman — were raised to be warriors.

When their families are murdered, Indra and Diana seek revenge on their killers, Satan’s Horsemen. Then Diana is kidnapped, and Indra goes undercover at a strip club the gang owns to discover where her friend has been taken.

When Rowan Kerr walks into the club, Indra realizes he’s even more powerful than she is. Rowan says he knows who she really is and what she was created to do, but she must go with him to learn the truth. Indra will do anything to save Diana. Including embracing her destiny as something more than human.

Rowan thinks Indra could be the teammate — and lover — he dreams of. But she’s convinced she’s been betrayed by the woman he works for – and she’s not wrong. Can he convince her to take a chance on him? And can Indra and Rowan defeat the very real aliens who are behind Diana’s abduction?

Angela Knight interviews Rowan Kerr

Me: Thanks so much for letting me interview you today…

Rowan: Like I had a choice. Killer scorpion mechs? Really?

Me: Well, I had to make sure the readers didn’t get bored.

Rowan: The reader wasn’t in danger of getting a scorpion tail through the face.

Me: Will you drop it about the scorpions? Look, the readers want to know what it’s like being one of Mothership’s Rangers…

Rowan: It’s not bad – except for all the giant mechanical scorpions.

Me: (sighs) Fine. So what was it like growing up, going to American schools, posing as an ordinary kid?

Rowan: Well, I had to lie whenever anyone asked me “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Because if I’d said, “A genetically engineered warrior serving a massive alien spaceship,” they’d have locked my ass up.

Me: Okay, you’re not wrong.

Rowan: Have to admit, though, it was exciting knowing I’d be fighting to protect humanity. Especially after the other alien ship showed up. I mean, the Boarosa are possessing people. One minute you’re the typical corporate CEO, master of all you survey, a wolf of Wall Street. Next thing you know, you’ve got an alien consciousness jammed in your head, using all your money and business contacts to gain control of the human race. And you can only watch as it fucks with everyone you know.

Me: Isn’t there something Mama can do about it? I mean, Mothership’s a lot more advanced than the Boarosans.

Rowan: Yeah, she could blow the Boarosan ship all to hell. Unfortunately, that would cause a mass extinction event when the debris and radiation hit Earth. Since we don’t want to reenact “asteroid vs. dinosaurs” — with humanity playing the dinosaurs — we’re going to have to fight a shadow war with the assholes. Hopefully without humanity catching us at it. Because that panic would be epic.

Me: That does sound… less than ideal.

Rowan: You’ve got a gift for understatement when you’re not being a sadistic bitch.

Me: At least I’m entertaining. What do you think of Indra Fox?

Rowan: She’s an extremely good dancer.

Me: (Laughs) That was a very toothy grin. Lust at first sight, huh?

Rowan: Well, the first time I saw her, she was swinging mostly naked around a pole. Indra was posing as a stripper to find out where her best friend was being held. Satan’s Horsemen, the mercenary gang that ran the club, had kidnapped Diana Newman on orders from the Boarosans. Indra spent months searching for her. That woman would do anything for the people she loves. And she’s a bad enemy to make. She and Di killed four of the Horsemen after the mercs murdered their parents.

Me: She and Di are genetically engineered too, right?

Rowan: Right. But their parents weren’t allowed to tell them anything about Mothership, since she and Diana were part of the Wildcards program. Our boss, Kahsu Abate Negasso…

Me: Also known as Mama.

Rowan. Right. Mama wants her Rangers raised among natural humans – we call ‘em Nats. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to understand how they think.

Me: But you aren’t Nats.

Rowan: Hell, no. We have denser bones and muscles than ordinary humans, which makes us a hell of a lot stronger and faster than your typical Nat. So Indra and Di grew up thinking they were aliens. Which caused all sorts of problems when I tried to recruit her. She blames Mama for Diana’s kidnapping, not to mention the deaths of their parents.

Me: Well, she’s got a point. You could have saved them if Mama had kept track of them.

Rowan: Yeah, but we didn’t know the Boarosans had found out about them. As it is, winning Indra over after all that isn’t going to be easy.

Luckily, I’m not the kind of guy who gives up.
