Holiday Traditions

Good morning, everyone!  I’m Claire, and I’m the entertainment for the day.  I’m also super excited to be here.  For those of you I haven’t had the opportunity to meet yet, I’m published in contemporary romance and contracted with Tor for a paranormal release in 2011.  I’m a history buff, a horse enthusiast, and above all, a romantic at heart.  Writing is, in the truest sense of the meaning, my passion.

I’m assuming most everyone is gearing up for Thanksgiving, right?  I’d love to hear what you all have on the menu above and beyond the turkey, and if there are any special things you do to celebrate this holiday.  My family is small, and our day is pretty routine ““ a bird, stuffing, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, and taters.  (Yes.  I said “taters’ ““ don’t shoot me, I can’t help it that there’s hillbilly blood in my veins.)

Not much changes, and I don’t think I’d want it to change too much.  Tradition is comfortable.  Something to look forward to.

Unless, you happen to be one of the three King brothers.

For Alex King, tradition means getting married on Christmas Eve while his ex-wife caters the wedding.  For Heath, being best man means returning home to confront his best friend’s widow ““ the only woman he’s ever loved.  And for Clint, acquiescing to his mother’s demands to return for the wedding means risking his future and every dream he’s ever known.

No, the poor King brothers want nothing to do with tradition this year.

I, however, am more than pleased to add Clint’s fiasco into my traditions ““ his story releases today through the Wild Rose Press.  So tomorrow will be a day of additional celebration in my household.

Clint’s tale holds a special place in my heart.  First, it’s the only book I’ve written that I’ve set in my home town.  This allowed me to dig into some of the things Kansas City is known for such as ice skating at Crown Center and the Mayor’s Christmas Tree brilliance.  Second, the collaboration between myself and the other two authors in the series was an amazingly rewarding challenge.

Above all, however, Clint faces some issues that I think a large majority of people have had to deal with in one way or the other:  The sacrifice between what the heart wants when it’s pulled two different ways; Feeling the need to uphold responsibility and struggling to fulfill self-perceived roles; Joining two families when a child is beyond resistant to the merger.

He’s one of the few characters I’ve created who literally has told the story to me.  I tend to be a heavy plotter, and my characters step through my plot exactly as it should be.  Clint, on the other hand, had some extreme moments where he rebelled against my outline.  All this made him one of the characters I’ll never forget, and the quiet strength that he exudes, but doesn’t know he possesses is a quality that makes my heart flutter, despite his being my creation.

With all that said, I’d like to introduce Clint’s story, A Christmas To Believe In, the third book in the Three Kings  Series.

* * * * * * *

A Christmas To Believe InWhen a man’s dreams are in ruin, all he needs is someone to believe…

Struggling Thoroughbred breeder, Clint King, hasn’t been home for Christmas in five years. Like his brothers, Alex and Heath, life has kept him away. Clint’s farm is barely hanging on. His prize mare’s due to foal any day, and in the wake of his father’s death, Clint can’t stand the idea of returning. The memories are too much, let alone his father’s imposing shadow. Except, Alex is getting married on Christmas Eve, and their mother’s put her foot down. She’ll have her boys at home. With his mare in tow behind him, Clint prepares to meet a sister he’s never known and Alex’s unexpected triplets. The one salvation he looks forward to is childhood companion, tomboy Jesse Saurs. Yet when he reunites with Jesse, he uncomfortably discovers she’s become all woman.

Jesse Saurs has everything she needs ““ financial security, a home, and a foster child who’s about to become her son. She’s spent two years breaking down Ethan’s emotional barriers, and with the final hearing scheduled just before Christmas, this year promises to make his dreams come true. When she learns Clint and his brothers are returning, she anticipates a holiday reunion that’s sure to entertain Ethan. But on the night of Clint’s return, the “brother’ she expected leaves her trembling after just a single hug. Even worse, Ethan makes it clear Clint’s not welcome.

Will this Christmas destroy what’s left of hopes and dreams, or will it give the three the gift they’ve all been longing for?

* * * * * * *

EXCERPT: (slightly edited for a PG audience)

“You’d like him, Ethan. He was a lot of fun when we were younger.

“”Uh huh.” Noncommittal, he answered in a flat tone.

Jesse lapsed into silence, sensing she walked a thin line. Still, she couldn’t let the subject rest. There had to be a way to convince Ethan that Clint wasn’t a threat to his stability. Until she achieved that, she couldn’t just let go and let him harbor hate. Clint didn’t deserve it. Cautiously, she ventured, “Horses could be a lot of fun.”

Ethan snorted.

“You might give it a try. Something new and different. It can’t hurt, at any rate. If you don’t like Angel, well, then you’ve at least given it a shot.”

He tossed his controller in front of him, his interest in the game lost. She braced herself for the inevitable, knowing full well, whatever came out of his mouth next would hurt.

“Give it up, would you? I don’t want to know him. I don’t have to like your friends.”

“But Ethan-“

He scooted away like she’d cracked a whip in his face. “Enough! Don’t you get it? I don’t give a **** about him.”

“Ethan Scott!”

“What? Too crude for you, Jesse?”

She flinched, drew in a deep breath and held it. Jesse. He hadn’t called her by her first name for over a year. Exhaling slowly, she set her controller down and slid off his bed. Though she knew in her heart, too many years of pain drove his emotions, the barb stung. On the same hand, she’d pushed. Ethan couldn’t tolerate pushing. He had to come to things on his own time.

Foregoing the lecture, she crossed to the door. “Goodnight, Ethan.”

He said nothing. Merely picked up his controller and set the options back to one-player. On a heavy sigh, Jesse left his room.

Inside hers, she clicked on the lamp by her bedside and reclined against her pillows. Tears brimmed in her eyes. She closed them to keep the salty flow at bay and curled her fingers into the sheets. In a thousand years, she never would have imagined that the only man she’d ever truly wanted would be Clint. In his arms, she felt safe. Protected. Undefeatable. He lit her up in ways she had only begun to comprehend, and it seemed as if fate determined to work against her.

If she weren’t careful, she’d lose Ethan. Every agonizing step she’d made would crumble under the weight of his fears. He’d close up, inevitably turn back to the life he’d known before he entered hers, and she couldn’t stomach the thought of where that would lead him. Jail, if he were lucky. Dead, if he wasn’t.

Yet, shouldn’t she be allowed some personal happiness as well? There were so many unwritten rules to parenthood ““ sacrifice for the children, put all personal goals aside, give up everything to see to their happiness. She’d exchange her life for Ethan’s in a heartbeat, but Clint offered something no child could. Even if it was only temporary, and this giddy feeling that brimmed in her soul would end when he left, he promised fulfillment of a need that ran so deep she couldn’t name it.

A tear slipped between her eyelashes and trickled down her cheek. She sniffled to hold the rest in check. She never should have let him kiss her a second time tonight. The first had been catastrophic enough. The second”¦

She wouldn’t be satisfied with anything but all of him after that second kiss. Instinct demanded she leap at what lay in front of her. Hang on to it until it burned itself out with his inevitable departure. Logic, on the other hand, warned her that if she did, she’d lose the one thing that mattered most ““ her son.

Amidst the gas-lit streets of 1870 London, twenty-two-year-old Tamsin’s world is shattered when she discovers her beloved uncle, a retired Lieutenant Detective for Her Majesty, dead at his desk. It is midnight and sounds from her uncle’s library woke her.

Determined to uncover the truth behind his untimely demise, Tamsin embarks on a perilous journey of deception and investigation. With the clock ticking and suspicion mounting, she must navigate the dangerous labyrinth of Victorian society to unmask a killer lurking in the shadows. A killer who may take her life as well. Perhaps a killer who is close to her.

Finding a welcome ally in Harrison Spenser, a criminal law student, whom her uncle mentored, Tamsin and Harrison race against time to unravel the secrets of her uncle’s final moments.

Can the two amateur sleuths uncover the sinister truths hiding behind the façade of respectability, or will the secrets of Uncle Basil’s demise be buried forever?

The Review
Fans of both historical romance and historical mysteries are going to love this book. First in what I hope will be a long running series, it features and intelligent and fearless heroine in Tamsin and her equally appealing partner in investigation, Harrison. Uncle Basil was so much more than just the retired civil servant Tamsin knew and loved, leading to many questions of who wanted him dead and why. Tamsin while determined to find her uncle’s killer also has legitimate worries about her future as an unmarried orphan of uncertain financial status. I was only sad that we did not meet Uncle Basil before his passing; he sounded like a fascinating person.

Kristmas Noel Holly was born in December. Her parents hated everything about the season, so why had they named her after Christmas? Kris’s childhood memories were not filled with peace and joy, more of dread. She’s ecstatic when an invitation arrives to a prestigious conference in Germany for the first week of December. Her salvation to avoid the festivities.

Nicholas Joseph Holladay loves the season, every decorated tree, carol, and Hallmark movie. Nick’s idea of a perfect Christmas for his daughter doesn’t include a business trip. He loves his job ten months out of the year, so he’ll accompany Kris. He hopes to remedy Kris’s holiday workaholic tendencies by rekindling the special magic of the season for her. He plans to take Kris to the famous holiday markets and show her how much she misses while working.

Will his plan succeed, or will he ruin their working relationship?
The Review
Kristmas Noel Holly may carry the ultimate Christmas name but his is one Scrooge who wished people would stop believing in the myth. I found myself disliking Kristmas but after getting to know her the reader can only feel sorry for someone who has never felt love. The writing of Mary Martinez is superb and provides the reader a Christmas romance worth reading. Each character takes a life all their own. The reader feels welcomed into the chaos of the season. I highly recommend the writing of Mary Martinez and her story of a lady Scrooge who is learning the reason for the season, but will she learn to late?

8 Steps for Starting an Author Newsletter by Kayelle Allen

As an author, building a direct line of communication with your readers is invaluable. One of the most effective ways to do this is through an author newsletter. Not only does it allow for consistent engagement, but it also serves as a platform to share updates, promotions, and personal insights into your writing journey. If you're considering starting your own author newsletter, here are eight basic steps to set you on the right path.

Step 1: Define Your Purpose
Before diving in, it's crucial to define the purpose of your newsletter. Do you want to share book updates, writing tips, personal stories, exclusive content, or engage your readers in a more interactive way? Understanding your primary objective will guide your content and style. Remember, your audience should always be at the forefront of these considerations. What value can you provide them?

Step 2: Choose an Email Marketing Service
Once you have a clear purpose, it's time to select an email marketing service. There are several options available, such as Mailerlite, ConvertKit, SendinBlue, Substack, and EmailOctopus. Look for features that fit your needs, such as customizable templates, automation capabilities, segmentation options, and analytics to track open rates and click-throughs. Some platforms offer free tiers, which can be perfect for getting started. Here are two I suggest (with affiliate links):

Mailerlite – many bells and whistles

Sendfox – simple and easy for newbies

Step 3: Build Your Subscriber List
Now that you have a service in place, it's time to start building your subscriber list. Make sure to create a clear and inviting signup form on your author website and social media platforms. Here are a few strategies for encouraging sign-ups:

- Offer a Freebie: Provide a downloadable eBook, short story, or reading guide as an incentive for readers to join your list.

- Promote Across Platforms: Share your newsletter signup link on your website, blog, social media accounts, and at the end of your published works.

- Engage Your Existing Audience: If you have a social media following or previous readers, leverage that c...

Books Series News Contact FAQ

Hello, everyone.

Hope everyone had a good New Years. I spent it at home with just me, G, and my non-alcoholic champagne. I’m glad I did because last week I had to let my sweet Gaius go.

It broke my heart and was a very hard decision to make, but after three different discussions with three different vets in the same practice over a two-week period…

One of them warned me that G may not be that dog that ever stops eating. Normally, loss of appetite is a very clear signal that it’s “time.” But G never lost his appetite. So, he got tons of treats those last few days. He got ice cream and bacon and steak; even a delightful, triple-cream brie. He got to say goodbye to all his favorite friends and I was with him until the last, holding him tight.

Do I miss him? Every day. Do I wish he had another twenty years of life but as he was at 5 or 6? Yup! Do I wish he could have shared these years with my Maxie…? Probably not. I worry what Max would have done to my good-natured boy. Max got me because I was NOT looking for a friendly dog that loved everyone. At the time, the two of us were meant to be together, bound by our mutual rage and distrust. Gaius, however, was sent from my mother from Elysian Fields. She was worried I would never be social if I got another paranoid dog with rage issues. And, as always, the woman was right.

As it is, I have sort of gone back into my protective cocoon. I’m not in the mood to speak to anyone and I have work to do, which gives me enough of an excuse to not go outside unless I have to.

I am planning on getting another dog sooner rather than later so that I don’t get too used to being a recluse. I might have already had one by now except I abruptly remembered that I have to call in for jury duty for a week at the end of January. I don’t want to bring a rescue dog home, only to abandon him for a few days at a kennel. I worry he or she will think they’ve been abandoned again and I don’t want them thinking that. So once jury duty is done, I can focus on next steps. Because, quite honestly, the silence in the house is deafening. I keep loo...

The Mackenzie Chronicles by Brenda Whiteside
Book 1
2022 Winner of NEST (National Excellence in Story Telling) Suspense

Lies can haunt, but the truth will kill.

Magpie MacKenzie doesn’t believe in coincidence. But when a ringer for her long-dead love walks into her life the same day skeletal remains are unearthed, she’s convinced the universe is sending her a message. Fearing her father will be accused of the crime, Magpie will do whatever it takes to find the truth. Even risk her heart on this familiar stranger who may hold critical clues to the unsolved mystery.

While visiting purportedly haunted Joshua, Arizona, lawyer Zack Peartree is instantly drawn to the free-wheeling shopkeeper. His attraction propels him on a collision course between past and present, where digging up secrets could prove fatal.

Using decades-old clues and Zack’s déjà vu moments, the couple embark on a treacherous race to prove her father’s innocence before Magpie becomes the next victim. Can they save her from a murderous fate, or will love be the final casualty?

Changeling Press, LLC #Maddog by @marteekakarland - Who knew we’d get ambushed by the cartel on our way to a village deep in the Amazon jungle?

Holly: I was sick as a kid. Leukemia. Felt like someone always had to drop everything to take care of me. Hate being dependent on people now, so I try to do everything myself. When my best friend takes up with a creep and won’t believe me when I tell her something’s not right with the man, I decide it’s safer (for her) if I go with her on a trip to Columbia he’s organizing. Bad news: I’m right. Fortunately the most annoying man I’ve ever come to count on thinks it’s his job to rescue me. This time, I might just let him. And that’s where the trouble starts…

Jax: I’ve known Holly nearly all her life. I’ve been her protector and the person she wants most when things go horribly wrong, which they do, more often than not. To say we have a contentious relationship is an understatement. I put a claim on Holly she never accepted, but it’s time to force the issue. Not because she doesn’t love me. Because she’s afraid history is doomed to repeat itself. She’s wrong. I’ll always come for her when she needs me. Like it or not, Holly’s more than my responsibility. No matter the cost, she’s mine.

Stryker by Marteeka Karland (Audio) (Salvation's Bane MC Audio 6) A Bones MC RomanceGenres: Action Adventure, Audio, BDSM, Contemporary Women’s Fiction, Romance, Suspense

Themes: MC Romance, Medical Romance, Military, Veterans, and First Responders, New Adult, Organized Crime

Series: Salvation's Bane MC Audio (#6)

Multiverse: Bones MC (#10)

He thinks I'm a magnet for trouble. I'm going to prove him right.

Stryker-Challenge accepted

Glitter: Yes, that’s my real name. Born stripper name, I know. I’ve been on my own since I was 14. When I tried to get a job with Salvations Bane MC at their strip club, Salvation’s Angels, their security saw right through my fake ID. Lucky for me, the club sent me to Beach Fit, their fitness club, until I turned 18. Now I work at Angels, and the crowd here loves me. Stryker’s still looking out for me. For some reason he thinks I’m a magnet for trouble. Now that I’ve got his full attention, I know what I want, and I’m going to prove him right.

Stryker: We try our best to keep things at the club legit. Last thing we need is an underage dancer attracting too much attention. OK, so she’s legal now, has been for nearly two years, but that girl’s everything this old man doesn’t need -- and can’t afford. But there’s another club encroaching on our territory, setting up a BDSM club on the other side of town, as a front to run drugs. Now I’ve got word there’s even more going on at The Dark than drugs. I was right. And who do I find right in the middle of it but Glitter. Only, she’s not involved with the thugs at The Dark. She’s their prisoner -- a sub who has no idea what it means to be a sub, but she thinks she wants to learn. Challenge ’effin accepted.

WARNING: This book contains scenes of an intense physical relationship between an older man and a younger woman, as well as extreme, graphic violence. These men aren’t angels and neither are the women. They love as hard as they fight. As always, you can expect a HEA with No Cheating.
