Happily Ever After by Lynn Painter

In HAPPILY NEVER AFTER, when Sophie Steinbeck finds out just before her wedding that her fiancé has cheated yet again, she desperately wants to call it off. But because her fiancé’s father is her father’s cutthroat boss, she can’t do it herself. So, she does what any reasonable person in a bind would do: she hires someone to object at her wedding.

That someone comes in the form of Max The Objector, a modern-day hero by Sophie’s standards. After the wedding-that-wasn’t, Sophie learns more about Max’s job, and with a bit of coaxing, decides that she’d like in on the action. After all, Max and Sophie agree, love isn’t real, and what could be more rewarding than stopping people from walking down the aisle with someone they know isn’t right for them?

As Max and Sophie work together, the blurrier the lines become. Between objecting gigs, early-morning jogs, and (totally meaningless) hookups, it’s becoming  harder to ignore the feelings building between them and maintain the assertion that love doesn’t exist.

But when a groom-to-be hires Sophie to object at his wedding, things take a turn. The fiancée he’s trying to ditch at the altar? The same woman who broke Max’s heart and made him lose faith in love. Now Max must decide if he can be party to his ex getting hurt. All the while Sophie is left wondering if these feelings she has for her partner-in-objecting might just be real after all.
