Sometimes your life can change when you least expect it.
That’s what happened to me last March. Well, really, the whole new chapter in my publishing career started in January when I saw a tweet from Angela James at Carina Press, Harlequin’s first digital-only imprint. “Send us your historicals!” she tweeted. And so I sent Angela my debut historical romance, CAPTIVE SPIRIT. Two months later, she offered to buy it and my life really hasn’t been the same since.
Hi, all! I’m Liz. I’m an author living amongst the saguaros, coyotes, and cowboys in the American Southwest. I write commercial fiction but mostly I write stories about ordinary people who do extraordinary things, oftentimes against the backdrop of Native American legends. I’ve been looking forward to spending the day with you today because it’s always way more fun spending time with book lovers than with just about anybody else, perhaps with the exception of Hugh Jackman and Gerard Butler. But a girl can dream. 🙂
Later today, I’ll share more with you about CAPTIVE SPIRIT and why I decided to write a novel about a young Hohokam Indian woman at the dawn of the sixteenth century. I promise you: The idea did NOT come to me in a dream. There are a couple of clues, however, in the book trailer that I keep on my web site.
And who are the Hohokam Indians, you ask? I’ll talk about them a little later too and you may wonder like I did why there aren’t more stories about the Hohokam Indians. Tons more.
In the meantime, grab your coffee and I’d love it if you could pop on over to my web site where I keep the first chapter of CAPTIVE SPIRIT , the back cover excerpt, and that really cool book trailer that I mentioned. Hint: Crank up the volume!
Anyone who makes a comment or asks a question today is entered to win a free digital copy of CAPTIVE SPIRIT.

15 years agoThanks so much, Amy! Are you a fan of historicals in general?

15 years agoHi Liz-I think you’ve been stalking me-I’m from Chicago too and lived in Arizona-ha ha! I’m always impressed with writers who do lots of research in areas where they know so little-it’s a lot of work! Did any of your research mention a connection between the Hohokam and the modern-day Tohono O’odham tribes? Thanks! I’m planning on reading your book-it sounds fabulous!!

15 years agoHi Marianne,
There are several tribes that claim linkages to the Hohokam, including the Hopi, the Yuman, and the Pima. The Pima are but one of the four tribes of the Tohono. In fact, it was the Pima who gave the Hohokam their name. Hohokam means “Those Who Have Gone.” In other words, “Vanished.” One of the theories on the Hohokam’s disappearance is that they migrated with the Pima. Anyway, lots of great history and Native American culture in the Sonoran Desert.
So you lived in AZ too? Well, sometimes I feel like I never left Chicago because there are so many people from the Midwest who have moved to Arizona.
I look forward to hearing what you think about the book! Be sure to stop by my web site and let me know. 🙂

15 years agoHi again, Amy,
We have similar reading habits. I like western historicals too. There’s something about rugged terrain that intrigues me. 🙂
