Furlough Love: For Old Time Sake
Roadside bombs, dodging bullets, snipers, and spiders the size of small dogs would destroy any man. Tired of losing men to suicide, mental institutions, and Rambo acts, General Zackariah Hagano takes matters into his own hands. He orders two weeks of mandatory Furlough Love for each man who serves one year of continuous service, starting with himself.
Excerpt:
“I shouldn’t tell you this, but for the last hour she’s been pacing, waiting for you to arrive. But, son”¦what were you thinking, leaving money like that? How did you think she’d feel? Not to mention the re-enlistment. It’s time you came home, son.” He raised a hand as Zack struggled to get out words that would explain his stupidity. “Go to your mate, Zack, and don’t let her leave until she forgives you.” His father smacked him on the back of the head. “That’s for acting like a fool. Leaving money, how stupid!”
He rubbed the back of his head, watching his father stomp toward the front of the house, grumbling under his breath. He had no answers to his questions. He’d gone back to do his duty to his country””but left behind his duty to pack and mate. And child”¦if he’d only known.
As to the money”¦he had meant well at the time”¦. He’d have to explain.
Tonight, he would claim what was his, and nothing could stop him”¦except his very angry mate. Zack punched the code into her little lock””luckily she hadn’t changed it since his last visit””and followed his mate up the stairs, prepared to face her rage.
A coo reminded him who else he’d let down. He was a father who had missed his son being born, but he would not miss any more of his life. At the top of the stairs, he paused and watched Red cuddle the baby to her breast, as she fed him.
Her gaze met his, but only the beat of soft jazz disturbed the thick silence. She was always listening to that music””including when his son had been conceived. “When was he born?” Zack knelt next to the chair, taking in every detail of the baby. “He’s so tiny, but hungry.” He laughed at the greedy sucking sounds.
“March sixth, but he’s big for his age. He couldn’t wait to be born and came a month early. I named him after my grandfather. Nate Zackary Reichert.”
And after him”¦. He flinched, wishing his son bore his last name as well. “You should have contacted me, Red. I would have come as soon as you called.”
She put the baby over her shoulder and patted his back, after covering her breast. “Why? You made it quite obvious you wanted nothing to do with me. I can take care of him fine. As soon as I sell this place, I’m thinking of moving to my parents’ old home. It sits on over ten acres of land. Plenty of room for our son to play.” She stood. “You can sleep on the couch.” Red left the room without once looking back.
He followed her into a nursery, painted blue, with white wolves dotting the walls. “I don’t think so, Red. I messed up. I’m a jerk and fool, but you and I belong together.”
