Although Catastrophe is the first time I have really delved into the urban fantasy genre with my m/m romances, I have done a series of what I call rural fantasy since the stories all take place in the more rural or remote areas of the southwest. This is my Thin Green Line series. In it, a new branch of the US Border Patrol has formed called the Paranormal Operations Unit and they are charged not with dealing with regular earthly aliens or immigrants but an invasion from other worlds, realms and dimensions that have started pouring in to disrupt our current environment! There are a total of five tales –so far–three of which are also in print in an anthology collection. As soon as I get one or two more, done there will be a second volume. I borrow from a lot of different elements and sub-genres in these stories which some readers and reviewers find disconcerting but others seem to enjoy.
This series began with Beyond the Shadows, followed by Wings of Love, and Runes of Revelation. They are in the first print collection. Then came Runes of Redemption and Druid in Drag. Who knows what is next. I’m waiting for that next character or couple to pop out and start talking to me.
Then in the back of my mind, I am seeing my version of Andrews’ “Edge” which I will call Checkerboard, In the northeast part of Arizona and northwest part of New Mexico parts of some Indian Reservations are set out in a checkerboard pattern with alternate section sof Indian Nation land and mostly government managed Forest Service or Bureau of Land Management lands. I am visualizing a similar arrangement of magic versus technology sectors and a young woman who has been reared on the reservation and is at least part Native American as a principle character. I’ll have the Navajo type of shape shifters called “Skin Walkers”and other beings out of native mythologies and spiritual traditions operating in the magical areas. That’s about as far as the idea has gone so far.
My main character will probably have a partner and I’m not sure yet if it will be male or female. I haven’t written any f/f romances but this one may go that way–or not. Too soon to tell. Whadda ya think, readers? Anything you want to suggest here? If I use an idea you give me I will put your name (or one of your choosing if you prefer) on a character in the first story, promise.
