What is your favorite Character Type by S. K. Yule

I love to write about all paranormal beings. I’ve written about vampires, werewolves, ghosts, demons, angels, dream warriors, aliens, and vampire/alien hybrids. I’m not really sure that alien falls into the paranormal category, but what the heck.

I’m interested to hear what you you like to read about. Is there a specific paranormal being that turns you on, or does it really make a difference as long as the story is written well?

Do you like geeky guys, alpha guys, geeky turn alpha guys, shy guys–well I could go on and on, but you get the gist–?

And, what about the heroine? If she’s a strong female with an aggressive attitude do you want to see her paired with a stronger male who can keep her in line? Or, would you rather see her with a man that submits to her? What kind of pairing personalities do you like? Shy + Outgoing, Aggressive + Introvert, Geeky + Athlete, Full figured + Muscle?

My favorite is the alpha male with a female who isn’t afraid to put him in his place. I love the guy who’s gotten every woman he’s ever wanted, and then he meets her. The one that won’t give him the time of day, and while it ruffles his manly ego, it also intrigues him, and eventually leads to him learning a few things about himself and love. I like to see a guy who can change, and realize that there is more to life than getting things easy.

I have written a menage called Three Lovers For Lucy (well, more than a menage actually), and am working another one. What’s your take on Menages?

    Hi! Nice to meet you.

I prefer alpha guys all the way. The more alpha the better. I don’t read much paranormal, but when I do, I prefer the ones with vampires.

A man and woman who have opposite personalities create great conflict and interesting plots. Shy and outgoing–yes! Aggressive and introvert–yes!

Looking forward to reading more about you and your books.

Thanks so much for stopping by! Love the input. You are right. Opposites provide great conflict.

I heard about your event here on the Coffee Time Blog through Coffee Time’s newsletter and included it on the calendar of events that I post every day at my blog http://www.blackvelvetseductions.com/readers_blog/ so I thought I would come over and take a peek at what was going on here so I could mention it on my blog.

    Hmmm…what kind of characters do I like…that’s a great question…and has a varied answer.

I don’t read a lot of paranormal (other than as submissions at Black Velvet Seductions) and have to admit that it hasn’t been a favorite genre. What seems to happen a lot within the genre is that the paranormal world overpowers the characters and I like the characters to be the center of the stories I read. That said, I’ve read a lot of really great paranormal books and have begun to read more of the genre (and enjoy it more) as I’ve discovered more paranormal books with the strong focus on characters that I like.

I like witches, psychics, ghosts the best, but have also read books that I’ve enjoyed a great deal which have included vampires.

Character types…I am definitely a fan of the alpha male…though there is something incredibly powerful about an alpha male who is gentle and nurturing with the woman he loves…who uses his alpha-ness to support, nurture, protect, her. Being a geek myself, and being married to a geek I am fond of geeks. Geeks can be alpha too. 🙂

Pairings…hmmm…I like characters who are at their root different from each other…characters who have had different backgrounds, different histories that have made them different from each other in fundmental ways. I like characters who are opposites. One wealthy the other poor…introvert vs. extrovert…muscles vs. full figured is yummy…

I like stories in which the characters shake each other up. I like lots of conflict…and generally conflict stems from differences.

I like erotic stories…though I think that they can also be poignant and emotional. I don’t buy that sweet has to be poignant and erotic is lusty and not very emotional. An erotic romance can be as poignant as a sweet one.

Menages…I haven’t read a great many, though I have enjoyed the ones that I have read a great deal. The thing that I have found most striking in the menages that I have read is the lack of jealousy between the characters. I like the atmosphere of sharing pleasure vs. the atmosphere of jealousy that one might expect in a story in which two or more men are with the same woman. I like menages. I like erotica. I like stories that go beyond vanilla in terms of sexuality. I like not knowing what the couple will do next sexually as opposed to knowing that they will have vanilla missionary sex. 🙂

Hmmmm…I think that about answers all the questions you asked.

Oh, I love that reply. You gave me a lot to think about, and I agree with you. Although, I do have to say, it is interesting to me to see two characters with the same personalities paired as well. This is tricky to write, and to make work, but I think it provides lots of conflict and growing space for the characters.

I appreciate that although you voiced that Paranormal is not necessarily your favorite genre, you have an open mind and are willing to give it a chance. Lots of people just say nah, I don’t like it, and never give it a chance. I love it when readers “wander” outside of their norm.

Thank you so much for stopping by, and I will be visiting your site too.

  • Laurie

🙂 I’m glad you liked the reply. I try to get around to some of the things that I post on the calendar on the blog and try to comment when I can, though sometimes it is hard to find the time to do everything I would like to do. I expect we ALL suffer from that from time to time. 🙂

It isn’t that I don’t like paranormal. It’s that I don’t like the structure of SOME paranormal. The first several paranormal books I read just happened to have way more of the world building than the character building and the characters seemed rather flat and uninteresting in comparison and that gave me a bad opinion of the genre which isn’t really warranted. I publish character driven paranormal and I LOVE all of the pieces that I have published. There are a lot of pieces published by other publishers that I love as well.

I think with some genres there are…things that happen more frequently within the genre than within other genres. For example, most of the time I don’t like characters in erotic romance falling into bed together the first few pages. That happens fairly frequently in erotic romance…so it is something I watch for and avoid in blurbs unless it seems there is a good reason for the couple to fall into bed right away. Then I may be intrigued enough to give it a chance, even though I wonder if it will push one of my “not so fond” buttons.

Definitely do visit the site…and do post a comment or two over there. You never know what you might win. 🙂 We’re giving away a Kindle to some lucky person who posts on the blog.

I enjoyed reading your blogs today.

Yes, I think I’m the same. Even though I write some erotica, I find myself always thinking, “now do they really know each other well enough to be doing this?” Unfortunately, sometimes I have to bite the bullet, and write what doesn’t necessarily feel comfortable to me. But, I guess that’s good in a way too because it allows me to grow as a writer. I do like my characters to have more reason to fall into bed together than merely finding each other “hot.”

I understand, also, what you mean about the world building in Paranormal. I agree that I like to get to know the character better than the atmosphere. Thanks again for stopping by.

Designing the Perfect Romance Cast Register by April 29th and save $5, use code ROMANCECASTKNIGHT2024 at checkout! In this brand-new month-long online class, New York Times bestselling author Angela Knight discusses the importance of creating the perfect cast for the kind of romance you’re trying to write.

A memorable romance cast is more than the sum of its parts. To create an effective book, all the characters – protagonists, antagonists, and minor characters – must work together as a unit. And each must fit the kind of book you’re trying to write. Leatherface of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre does not belong in a Rom Com. Nor do you want minor characters to steal the book.

But how do you create a good cast for this particular book and the audience you’re aiming for?

Angela discusses how to design your heroic couple for each other, along with the minor characters and sidekicks who help make the protagonists three-dimensional.

She’ll also talk antagonists and their henchmen, and how to use them to create tension and excitement.

Next, she’ll explore dialogue, humor and arguments as a way to develop character and conflict.

The result will be a firm foundation for your book so you won’t be flailing in the dark, trying to figure out why the heck your book isn’t working.

Lessons in this month-long online class will be posted on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, students may email scenes to Angela for her private critique and suggestions.

Check out #marteekakarland #hot #MC series #GrimRoad series. Save at #changelingPress #Rocket #Lemon #Bullet These belong on your #keeper shelf

Rocket: My life pretty much took a hard left a year ago when I first met Lemon. She’s wise beyond her years and as abrasive and sarcastic as they come. The second she busts my VP’s balls -- literally -- I know I’d never be able to forget her. A year later I’m still infatuated with the vicious woman. When she runs off to charge hell with a water pistol, I’m right behind her wondering how we’re gonna get out of this one alive. But I have a smile on my face and a determination to give this woman anything she wants. Even if it means some things in my club are going to have to change.

Lemon: Look. This is supposed to be all about how Rocket caught my eye and I decided I wanted him but there were obstacles and… phfffffff… Forget all that. What you need to know is when people are stupid, they need a kick in the… Crap. I’m not supposed to swear here. Grrrrr! Anyway, this is where I come in. Grim Road needs fixing. I’m not exactly qualified to do club… garbage, but Rocket? Yeah. I might have decided I’ll keep him, so… I’m great at whipping people into shape. Grim Road, meet Lemon. See me, love me, MF’ers.

Rocket: Just pass me the beer and popcorn…

Lemon: I’m settling in at Grim Road in my role as vice president. The men test me, but it’s all in good fun. I think I enjoy it as much as they do. Then, out of nowhere, things go horribly sideways. I realize how much weaker I am physically than everyone else in the club. That weakness can be a horrible liability. Yeah. Things are going great. Until they aren’t. I may have bitten off more than I can chew…

Rocket: My little sourpuss is a force to be reckoned with. She takes everything dished out to her and gives it back in spades. She’s my VP, but she’s also my old lady. Sometimes, I need to take care of her. More importantly, she has to let me. That fact is never more apparent than when a small team of roughnecks think she’s a woman from another club.

Kissed by the Alien is the second book of the Holiday Heartmates series by Julie K. Cohen.

Lexi is amazing! She’s strong, brave, resourceful, fearless, stubborn and feisty. And she has such a kind and compassionate heart. Even more, I loved her courage, determination and confidence to do the things she does and to face any challenges and hardships thrown her way. Lexi is a wonderful woman and I loved her so, so much!

And Lutan is such an incredible male! He’s brooding, quiet, fearsome and not very fond of Earth. And he’s also honorable, kind and fiercely protective. But the Zyanthan warrior also carries so much guilt and pain inside his heart. Nevertheless, Lutan is amazing and I adored everything about him!

I absolutely loved everything that happened between Lexi and Lutan! While on a mission to track down illegal blasters that keep finding their way on Earth, Lutan captures a male who turns out to be no man at all. I loved those two together! I loved their instantaneous attraction and their chemistry was fantastic. Even more, their banters, bargaining and teasing were so much fun to read. Lexi and Lutan might seem to be on opposite sides of the law, but they fit so well together. I loved how protective Lutan was of Lexi and I adored Lexi for standing her ground and never backing down from challenges and danger. And, yet, both had so many things they needed to deal with. Lutan also really did his best to stay away from Lexi, but fate cannot be denied. And when they couldn’t resist the undeniable need for one another anymore, the passionate moments they shared were so hot! I just love the Zyanthan warriors and all their… extras! Lexi and Lutan were so perfect for each other and, after everything both went through, they deserved to find happiness and love together!

Overall, Kissed by the Alien is another fantastic addition to the series! It’s filled with suspense, danger, action, drama, angst, twists, betrayals, humor, scorching hot passion and magnificent characters.
