Nandil is an android that was created hundreds of years ago by humans to fight in wars in their stead. He has been given self-awarness and consciousness by an ancient alien artifact that he and the other Artos call The Lantern.

Sangar is a human that has been shot down and killed in the sky above Nandil’s home.

When Nandil arrives to see the wreckage that has fallen from the sky, he discovers a dead human wrapped around an ancient artifact the likes of which he has never see. A round metal object, similar to the other ancient artifacts the Artos have collected and guarded for hundreds of years, it actually seems to grieve when it sees the dead human. To Nandil’s astonishment, the object sends it’s power into the dead human and reanimates him. At the same time the globe explodes into nothingness. However, the human has no memory of his former life and no idea who he is or where he is. Nandil does what any sentient being would do, he takes the man back to the healers for healing, but the human seems to imprint on him and does not want him to leave, so Nandil stays with him. Eventually when it becomes apparent that the man may never regain his memories Nandil gives him the name of Sangar. Over time Nandil decides to take Sangar on as a student and teaches him the ways of the Templars, those who protect the temple and the ancient artifacts within. Over time, Sangar developes romantic feelings for Nandil and while Nandil knows and accepts this, he cannot return those feelings, at least not in the same way; he is not built for romance, either anatomically nor emotionally, he was built to win, always to win. Will Sangar be able to accept what Nandil is willing to give him?

I have to say that this is one of the strangest erotic romances I have ever read. Not in a bad way mind you, but I had a difficult time relating it as a romance though it clearly is one, just a different one. Since Nandil is an android and as I mentioned above not an anatomically correct android, which might have made this story a little easier to relate to, it made it harder to see this story as your typical romance. I think more importantly much of the relationship between Nandil and Sangar is emotional, though Nandil does try to help ease Sangar sexually, it’s not the same since he does not need the same from Sangar. I enjoyed reading Victory Conditions, and it is very imaginative, and the author got the emotions of both Sangar and Nandil spot on. The world building is very creative. If you like stories that are different, and you enjoy m/m romance and science fiction, you will probably like this story.
