Emma Gladstone is the disgraced daughter of a vicar. She works as a seamstress in London and dreams of having her own shop.

The Duke of Ashbury was seriously injured at the Battle of Waterloo, leaving him scarred and alone. His fiancée was repulsed by him. He still needs an heir.

When a woman forces her way into the Duke of Ashbury’s home wearing a hideous wedding gown, Ash is appalled and intrigued by her beauty and her boldness in demanding payment. The dress was created for his erstwhile fiancée who refuses to pay for it. Ash has no need of a dress, but he does need an heir to the dukedom and Emma Gladstone is obviously brave enough for the position.

I loved this Beauty and the Beast story. Ash was a bit hard to like in the beginning, but Emma won me over right away. Ash cannot help falling in love with the brave Emma and she sees beyond his scars to the noble man beneath them. Despite his efforts to be unlikable, the author shows us his true nature through the eyes of Emma, his servants, and Trevor, the boy he befriends during one of his late night jaunts as “the Beast of Mayfair”. Emma has a really interesting circle of friends and I am curious to learn more about each of them. I look forward to the next book in the series.
