Layla’s Gourmet Pizza is the best pizza place in town, which is the fulfillment of her lifelong dream. She has worked hard to get where she is and refuses to let up, even for love. She knows her customers not so much by name, as by the pizza they order. And Mr. Double-Cheese is mighty fine.
Raymond has come in for double-cheese pizza each week for a long time, but so do a lot of guys. He has been trying to muster up the courage to really get to know Layla, but ends up buying pizza from her instead. It is only when his dog dies that he finally has a real conversation with her.
Layla has a hard time slowing down enough for love to catch up. She does not trust it anyway, as it makes a woman do silly stuff and makes a man feel entitled to run her life. Besides the restaurant, the town around her is being ‘gentrified’ for the sake of newcomers. She is a lifelong resident and resents that, but at the same time the newcomers buy a lot of pizza. It is up to her friends (also her employees) and a cute puppy named Dorothy to get Layla to take a real relationship with Raymond seriously. But then Raymond keeps secrets and old residents start protesting the new development.
I love how Layla’s employees truly care about her and try to get her to slow down for Raymond. A lot of authors have trouble creating a believable support cast for a Romance genre novel, but not this one! And this is only a novella, which is much shorter. It was easy to imagine sitting at a table watching Layla’s drama unfold before your eyes. The author made me want her to win the day and live happily ever after, and to eat a lot of pizza.
