Amaris Maxwell is the daughter of a prominent doctor. He has declared her an invalid, suffering from hysteria. She rarely leaves her home.
Jackson Moreland is a former police inspector. After the brutal murder of his wife, he suffered a nervous breakdown and was confined in Broadmoor. Now recovered, he is not sure what he wants to do with his life. He misses police work.
In London during the terrifying era of Jack the Ripper, a chance meeting in the park leaves Jackson attracted to and intrigued by Amaris. When fate brings them together again, he is determined to get to know her better even though her father discourages it. There is something odd and dark going on in the Maxwell house and Jackson is determined to save Amaris from her father’s grip.
I liked the setting and the main characters of this novel. Amaris is a damsel in distress, but does as much to save herself as the hero of the story. Jackson has suffered his own trauma, but with the support of his uncle is making his way back from tragedy. The story is filled with suspense and drama. The author is obviously fascinated with the period, but has unnecessarily crammed almost every unsavory incident of the period into the story. Some fit in with the plot, but others are just distracting and add nothing to the story.
