“That’s your one condition?” she asked. “I tell you about my love life?”
I chuckled. She had a feisty side. I liked that about her.
“No. The job’s yours. Even if you were a vampire, I’d still want you working for me.”
She giggled. “I’m not a fan of blood. You’re pretty safe there.”
“That’s a shame. I’m fond of having my neck bitten.”
Miranda gave me a puzzled look. “Is this how you treat all your employees?”
“Nope. But the more I get to know you, the more attracted I become.”
“I’m attracted to you too.” Her voice quivered as she stared down at her clasped hands. “But I think we should keep things professional.”
As someone who didn’t mind breaking rules for the sake of pleasure, I was disappointed, but also wanted to respect Miranda’s wishes.
“I understand. I can still ask about your love life, though, can’t I?” I couldn’t resist.
“There’s nothing to tell.” She crossed her legs and angled her body away from me.
I knew I’d crossed the line, but I persisted anyway. I was dying to know more about Miranda. “I’m sure you’ve broken plenty of hearts.”
She shook her head. “I’ve lived a very dull life.”
When she turned toward me, I didn’t just step over the line, I leapt over it. Before another thought entered my head, I took Miranda into my arms and my mouth landed on hers.
Her soft lips parted and my tongue traced the fullness of her lips before entering deeply. She tasted sweet, like ripe fruit.
As my fingers slid down her arm, her soft skin held me captive while I devoured her. Blood charged straight to my groin.
I was reaching for the zipper on her gown when she pulled away and looked at me. “Do I have to sleep with you for this job?”
That was like dropping a block of ice onto my head.
I moved away from her. “No way.”
My father’s womanizing ways entered my thoughts. I wasn’t going to be like him, despite Miranda inflaming my libido.
“I’m just attracted to you,” I said. “I feel like we know each other well. Hell, I’ve even crashed on your sofa.”
Miranda smiled at that recollection.
She sipped on her drink and looked up at me. Her moist lips parted slightly. “I’ve never been with a man before.”
I nodded. “I understand. Only boys. That makes sense for someone so young. You’re only twenty-three.”
“That’s not what I meant. I’m a virgin.” She stared down at her feet.
I nearly dropped my drink.
At her age?
“Oh,” was all I could say. She was obviously saving herself for marriage. I respected that. I’d never met a girl like Miranda before. All the girls I’d hung out with were free and easy, just like me.
I had to take a step back. I wasn’t ready for marriage, no matter how attracted I was to Miranda.
