SUGAR AND SPICE

The aroma of fresh baked cookies filled the kitchen as she put another cookie sheet into the oven. More than one batch would be gone by tonight, once the kids got home from school.
Amy wondered if she should bake some peanut butter cookies for”¦ “Jim.” She shook her head to clear out the thought. She didn’t need cookies for someone that no longer lived here.
Her eyes grew misty over the truth that their marriage was finally over. She often wondered why she held any hope these last six months. It seemed that every day she wished he would walk back in that door.
She dropped her gaze from the door, hating herself for her lack of willpower. She needed to wash him out of her life.
The stove buzzer snapped her out of her melancholy mood. The cookies looked just right, all tan and fluffy. As she slid them off the sheet onto the nearly filled layers of newspapers on the counter, she heard the door opening behind her and she wondered if the kids were home already.
“It smells like home”¦Amy.”
Time seemed to stop as his voice rolled through her. She carefully set the cookie sheet in the sink and put the spatula and hot mitt down before turning about to look at Jimmy, standing in her kitchen.
She felt as if her voice hit her heart and neither would work. But how she looked at him, how her gaze took his full six foot three body, those broad muscled shoulders and tight abs were enough to make any girl’s head turn. The tears pressed against her eyelids knowing how much she missed this man.
All her concentration went into making her voice work. “Jimmy.” Just one word, but that one word held her heart’s desire.
“How have you been, Amy?”
She wondered if he found it hard to talk with her, as well. She nodded, “I am fine, so are the kids.”
“You look beautiful”¦”
She bit her lip, wondering how to take the compliment, he hadn’t told her that in years. Her hand automatically rose to smooth down her hair, knowing it was a mess. Hell, she’d been baking all day for the school dance. She was hot and sweaty, tired and just pure lonely!
He stepped towards her and Amy backed into the counter, wondering how to escape or if she really wanted to.
“You look so good.” He gave her a shy smile as he stopped right in front of her. “I can’t help but remember all the times I’d come home and find you baking for the kids.”
She watched his hand rise and come towards her, she closed her eyes as if he would kiss her. She felt him brush his fingers through her hair and forced herself to look up at him.
“There is flour in your hair.”
The forced smile she gave him seemed to make his brow furrow. She couldn’t stop looking at him, not sure what she saw in his eyes as they gazed at her.
When he suddenly went to his knees before her, Amy knew she wanted to melt under the way he looked up at her.
“I’ve been a fool, Amy.”
She looked away, his hands reached up and held her arms, preventing her escape.
“Please Amy, please look at me, see the truth, Amy.”
Crying wasn’t allowed, but she wanted to cry for all the pain he caused her. She never had to force herself or find it so hard to look at Jimmy. “It’s been six months, Jim. You’ve been gone for six months, not a call, not a word”¦”
“Amy, I’ve never regretted anything more than I do leaving you that day.” He moved where she look, refusing to let her ignore him. “I can’t even remember why I left. All I know is this has been the worse six months of my life.”
Amy looked down at his upturned face and into his eyes. “Then why did you stay away?”
She swallowed hard over the tears she saw gathering in his eyes.
“Pride, that’s all I can blame my behavior on.”
His hands let go of her arms, coming to rest at her waist. “I know it isn’t a very good reason, Amy. But it is the only reason I can find.”
Her hand reached out and cupped his cheek. When he turned his head and kissed her palm she nearly died right there. “Why did you come home, Jim?”
“Because one thing kept pulling at me, Amy.”
“What, Jimmy?”
“I love you, Amy. Only you, forever.”
The tears were running down his face and her own. Her thumb brushed at them on his cheek. “I always thought we both loved each other. Why now Jimmy, what made you come home now?”
“I couldn’t stay away any longer. If you tell me to go, I swear I will, you have every right to do that. But Amy, please honey, please believe me, I love you and want to spend the rest of my life with you. Don’t turn away from me, Amy.”
She looked at him and smiled. “I could never stop loving you, Jimmy, never. I’ve done a lot of thinking these last months. I can’t say I know why we split, why we were so distant to each other, I am sorry it ever got like that. But Jimmy, I know one thing that has never changed, I love you with all my heart, not time, nor distance can change how I feel.”
His arms wrapped around her and pulled her to him, he buried his face against her stomach and Amy’s hands went about his head, reveling in the pure touch of him against her.
“I’ll never leave you again, Amy. I swear I won’t do that to you ever again.”
As he rose in front of her, his embrace stayed. Her hands rested against his chest. She felt his head lower and she rose to meet his lips. The kiss seemed to flow through her, igniting all those trigger points that she hadn’t felt in a long time. As his tongue darted and parlayed with her own his hands rose to cup her breast and press his thumb over the nipples. Like fire those tender nubs stiffened and hardened beneath his manipulation and Amy knew she wanted more.
