The constant testing and training are challenging Tavi both physically and mentally, and right now he would love nothing more than a hot meal and a good night’s sleep.  Not having a fury to call upon also puts him at a disadvantage with his peers, although he has other strengths that are not always so obvious.

Taking to the sky almost makes Amara forget the troubles brewing on the horizon.  She and Count Bernard of Calderon are on a mission to find out what happened to an entire village, and what they discover will strike terror in the hearts of the Aleran people.

Gaius, the First Lord of Aleran, is buckling under the strain of holding back unimaginable storms, and Tavi knows it is only a matter of time before he collapses.  With the festivities of Wintersend in full swing there is danger at every turn, but what lies beneath the city is far more dangerous than any political coup.  In the Aleran countryside Amara and Bernard are fighting a horde of creatures only whispered about in ancient legends, which they are now finding to be very real and very deadly.  This same threat is closing in on the Citadel, and Tavi fears that even with all of his strength and cunning it is only a matter of time before their world comes crashing down.

Mr. Butcher is a master crafter in the art of storytelling, holding you spellbound from the very first chapter.  The people and creatures within these pages vividly come to life, and none more so than Tavi.  His humanity is his greatest asset, which he displays over and over in the course of this battle.  This is one of those series that begs to be read from beginning to end, sweeping you away in a world full of amazing and fantastical characters.
