To read, not take!
My debut novel is a contemporary romantic suspense set in the fictional town of Seaclusion, Washington which is based on a place I vacation at named Long Beach; a small town on the Washington coast, right on the Pacific ocean.
One day while sightseeing I visited the North Head Lighthouse which is at the mouth of the mighty Columbia River where it spills into the ocean. Later, I was across from the lighthouse when a nasty storm was brewing and I took this picture.
It was so creepy looking, with the lighthouse light rotating against the black clouds and splashing, misty ocean waves. I felt like I was about to see some Gothic villain stand at the point and howl into the wind. But instead my imagination started to think up my own villain, which soon became the ex-husband Marcus Leery to my heroin Cassie Reeves. And it was this scene, at the lighthouse, that started the premise for my novel and became the pivotal scene for the book.
I wrote the hero, John and heroine, Cassie as a couple dating in high school when I myself was just out of high school. After I had the setting worked out for Poison, I needed characters to fill it. So I began wondering what if John and Cassie met up again ten years later. Who would they be? How would they be? And of course why did it take so long for them to reunite? And what had ripped them apart to begin with?
So I had betrayal, reignited love, a violent villain and some poison added to the mix, making the ingredients for my romantic suspense!
Why Poison? Well obvious answer is it’s a weapon used in the novel (you’ll have to read to find out how). The villain blames Cassie for the violence inside of him, in a way poisoning him, and Cassie thinks that she is poison to herself and those around her because of the mistakes she has made in her past. The book is as much about Cassie’s journey to accept and forgive herself, as it is her journey to escape the man who is trying to harm her and her young son.
I took the picture of the North Head lighthouse in 2003, so it is especially exciting to me that in 2013 my debut novel’s cover is based on this picture! The cover is an exact, perfect reflection of my imagination”¦which is startling to see in color now!
Poison is available now in e-book with Amazon’s KDP Select program
The official release date is July 5, 2013, where it will be available everywhere and in print!

Cassie Reeves betrayed John Tyler a decade ago, but now, John is the only person Cassie can turn to for help protecting her son from her violent ex-husband. John’s quiet life as a small town doctor in Seaclusion, Washington has no place in it for Cassie, her son, or the feelings Cassie’s presence rekindles. John and Cassie’s mutual attraction reignites, despite everything that drove them apart a decade ago, and threatens to destroy them now. No matter how much Cassie has changed, and tried to right her past wrongs, there is no escaping her ex-husband. Cassie knows that only she can end what her ex-husband has started. But will she survive long enough to have a chance at the happiness that has escaped her for so long?
Excerpt:
Cassie sighed and pushed the flowers onto the counter between them. She tidied her desk, avoiding his gaze. Finally she stood and gathered her things.
He watched her. He didn’t like hearing Tim was scared his mom wouldn’t come home from work. What kind of knowledge was that for a kid to have? Hell, he didn’t like that Cassie was scared that she wasn’t going to come home from work. He didn’t think anyone could fake the fear she had of the innocuous floral arrangement.
Cassie was just about to hustle past him, when he put a hand on her arm to stop her. She paused, looking at his hand, then up into his eyes. Her lips trembled. She quickly dropped her face from his view. She raised a hand to wipe at her cheeks. Tears?
Damn it all to hell. A stab of genuine sympathy filled him. He put a knuckle under her chin and forced her to look up him. Her eyes were glazed in moisture. She was trying not to cry. He swallowed, unsure why her efforts to hold back tears from him put a knot in his throat. Had he become so heartless with his anger that he couldn’t let her fear a man she seemed to think wanted to physically harm her?

About me (Leanne Davis):
I live in the rainy area of Seattle, Washington, and spend as much time as I can getting away from the rain by traveling to destinations all across the state where my family and I do tons of camping, boating, fishing, horseback riding, and even ATV riding. Many of the locations we camp at become the basis for my books. Most of my settings are fictional but based on a real place”¦and all are set in Washington State.
