“CHENDELL starts as a boy-meets-girl story, connecting a girl from the U.S. to a boy from China, told in an unusual compelling format. It is about love and family, but also about insects and trees. When boy and girl become a super couple, the reader accompanies them on a wild, dangerous journey, and then, when your heart is in your throat, something happens that is shocking, unique and utterly heartwarming. Leslie Landis has written a tale I’ll never forget. Bravo!” – Best-selling author Thom Racina
Why did I give Robin the ability to control bugs? I know that is a power I would love to have. It would be great to make sure that I am never stung by a bee or wasp. That a mosquito never bites me. That those little ants stay out of my house. That a tick never attaches to my clothes. That a spider never accidentally spirals down its silk thread onto me. The latter event causes me to jump at least 5 feet in the air!
But that is only part of it. I am fascinated – from afar – by bugs. That something so small can be so perfect in its form and adaptation and so important to the ecology of the earth. That’s why I don’t go out of my way to kill bugs. When I am outside, if a bug buzzes around my head, I swat it away. And if a bug is walking in front of me, I give it the right-of-way. And inside my house, I suck the bug up with my bug vacuum and throw it outside. After all, they are living their lives. Just as we are living ours.
