Can Characters be Color-Coded?

As a writer, I often wonder how my character should behave. Would my protagonist respond this way? How would this secondary character act in this situation? Should his reaction be different than the way I would respond?

A while back, at work, I was introduced to a character analysis tool called Insights©. The program examines what personality preferences people lean toward, and suggests four primary colors to describe four main behavioral preferences.

Different reactions are possible to a similar situation by characters of different colors. For example, consider a scene near an elevator on a busy morning:

• A RED would go straight into the lift and press his button.

• A YELLOW would invite others in saying there’s plenty of room for everyone.

• A GREEN would wait in the queue, going from one queue to the next, dithering about which one to settle on.

• A BLUE would step into the lift cautiously, and if crowded, count the number of people. If the number is over the limit, the Blue will point that out and ask someone to get off.

Knowing the colors and how to communicate with people of different hues could help to build stronger relationships in our lives and more authentic characters for our stories. How would you respond at a busy elevator? What color best suits your personality?
